Yemen’s government attacks Houthi positions
Yemen’s Saudi-backed government says it has carried out artillery attacks against the Iran-backed Houthi group in the northern al-Jawf Governorate.
In a post on X, the Yemeni forces of the Saudi-backed government said they targeted “gatherings and dens” of the Houthis across al-Jawf.
Earlier, Yemeni forces claimed several drone attacks on Houthi fighters in Marib. It also said it launched 181 operations against Houthi positions in several governorates on Saturday and Sunday, killing and wounding dozens of members of the group.
The fighting in Yemen comes amid the US-Israel war on Iran. The United Nations has warned the country faces its highest risk of returning to full-scale war since a truce in 2022.

Houthis claim attack on Saudi vessels in Red Sea
Yemen’s Houthis say they attacked what they described as a Saudi military ship and four escort vessels in the Red Sea with missiles.
The group’s military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, made the claim on Telegram. There was no immediate confirmation from Saudi authorities.

Yemen’s Houthis warns Saudi against escalation
Yemen’s Houthi group has warned Saudi Arabia against escalating what it called a “blockade on the Yemeni people” in a statement.
The group said there was “no alternative to [Saudi] lifting its blockade on Yemen, ending its mobilizations, and allowing the Yemeni people access to their resources,” the statement said.
Officially known as Ansar Allah, the Iran-backed Houthis have seized vast swathes of Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa, in 2014, and have since been battling the Saudi-backed, internationally recognized government based in Aden.
On July 20, the Houthis declared a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, affecting Riyadh’s pivot to the Bab al-Mandeb Strait for oil exports following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Injured, dead crew of attacked cargo ship departs Yemen’s al-Makha port
Eight injured sailors and the bodies of three deceased seamen from Indonesia and Pakistan have departed Yemen’s al-Makha (Mocha) port, according to port director Abdulmalik al-Sharabi.
Al-Sharabi told local media the bodies of the dead and wounded crew members of the cargo ship Tihama were being transported to their home countries.
The vessel was attacked in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi group on August 11.

UN rights chief calls for de-escalation in Yemen
UN human rights chief Volker Turk is alarmed by the increasing number of civilian deaths in Yemen and is calling on the Houthis and the internationally-backed government to “de-escalate tensions and spare the Yemeni people from further misery”.
Since seizing the capital Sanaa in 2014, the Iran-backed Houthi rebels have been battling the Saudi-backed, internationally-recognized government.
Attacks and retaliations have surged in recent weeks, with the Houthis increasingly targeting residential areas.
The UN said Houthi strikes between August 7 and 15 killed several people and injured others, including a child.

US envoy backs Yemen government’s fight against Houthis
Neil Hope, the Charge d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Yemen has supported the Saudi-backed Yemeni government’s fight against the Iran-backed Houthi group in a meeting with the vice president of the Presidential Leadership Council in Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh.
Hope discussed recent Houthi attacks with Abdulrahman al-Mahrami, describing them as “deliberate attacks targeting Yemeni civilians”.
Hope said that al-Mahrami, leads “one of the most effective forces in the fight for freedom against Iranian hegemony through its proxies in Yemen”.
He noted that al-Mahrami supports unity, which, according to the US Embassy, will enable all Yemenis to build a better future.

Woman, child injured in Houthi shelling Yemen’s al-Dhale
The Houthis have shelled southwestern Yemen’s Al-Dhale governorate, injuring a woman and a child, according to Yemen’s state-run Saba News Agency.
The report quoted local sources as saying that the targeted area was residential, adding that Houthi attacks have intensified in the Hajar and Murais districts.
