Palestinian Civil Defence recovers 55 bodies from Gaza City rubble

The Palestinian Civil Defence has stated that its crews have recovered the bodies and remains of 55 people from beneath the rubble of a building in the Zeytoun area of Gaza City.

The victims all belong to the Malka family and had sought refuge in the building roughly two years ago during an Israeli bombing campaign. Authorities pointed out that they had been searching for more than 60 bodies of victims from the Malka family over the previous 72 hours.

Having now discovered most of the remains, a joint funeral procession is due to take place early next week.

UK has to act ‘more decisively’ on Gaza, foreign secretary says

Britain’s Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband says the UK must act “more decisively” on Gaza’s humanitarian crisis.

In a video shared on Instagram, he said: “I just came out of this meeting talking about Gaza to people who have been there, are there, on the ground. Frankly, it was horrific, what is unfolding.”

He said experts told him of “medicines being blocked” and “children dying while waiting for vital lifesaving treatment”.

He added: “We, as a UK government, as the Prime Minister, have got to act – and act more decisively than we have.”

Israeli gunfire wounds child at a camp near Gaza City

A child has been transferred to al-Shifa Hospital with moderate injuries after Israeli forces opened fire on a camp for displaced people near Gaza City, the Palestinian news agency Wafa reports.

Local sources also told Wafa that Israeli troops targeted Gaza homes with explosive devices around dawn on Saturday.

Heavy gunfire, meanwhile, was reported east of Gaza City, with artillery shelling under way northwest of Rafah.

Scale of bodies buried under rubble ‘unprecedented catastrophe’: Gaza media office

Recovering the bodies of those trapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings in the Gaza Strip is an “unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe”, the government media office has warned.

In a press statement, General Director Ismail al-Thawabta said Gaza faces “serious repercussions” from the thousands of bodies currently stuck under debris.

The scale of the crisis exceeds Gaza’s capabilities amid an ongoing Israeli blockade on machinery and heavy equipment, he added.

Al-Thawabta also cited the attack on the Engineers’ Building, south of the Nuseirat refugee camp, on October 31, 2023. Although 106 bodies have been recovered from the site, “hundreds” remain buried there, the director-general said.

Gaza health ministry reports 17 people killed and 27 wounded in past 48 hours

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza is reporting that 17 people were killed and 27 wounded in the enclave over the past 48 hours, according to figures compiled from hospital admissions.

The ministry said the latest casualties included five new fatalities, one person who died from previous wounds, and 11 bodies recovered from beneath debris. It added that additional victims remain trapped under rubble or lying in the streets, with ambulance and civil defence teams still unable to reach them.

Since the current ‘ceasefire’ took effect in October last year, the ministry said a total of 1,344 people have been confirmed killed and 4,464 injured across Gaza, with 815 bodies recovered from collapsed structures.

Civil defence recovers 106 sets of human remains in Gaza City’s Zeitoun

Civil defence teams in Gaza have recovered 106 human remains, including 55 intact bodies, from beneath the rubble of destroyed homes in the Zeitoun neighborhood of Gaza City, the Quds News Network is reporting.

The recovery operation, which comes nearly three years after the start of the conflict, targeted the ruins of properties belonging to the Malka, Irheim, Salmi and Balawi families, according to the Palestinian news outlet reporting on Saturday.

Crews are continuing search efforts beneath the debris of the Engineers’ Tower, where an estimated 150 Palestinians are believed to remain buried following an Israeli attack that Human Rights Watch has described as indiscriminate and unlawful.

Gaza rescue teams recover remains of 55 from Malka family home, nearly three years after Israeli strike

Rescue teams in the Gaza Strip recovered the remains of 55 Palestinians from beneath the rubble of a home in the Zeitoun neighborhood, in the southern area of Gaza City, destroyed by Israeli forces on November 19, 2023.

Civil Defense crews said the remains belonged to members of the Malka family, who had sought shelter in the family home after being displaced from their own residences amid intense Israeli bombardment early in the war. More than 60 people were believed to have been in the building at the time it was struck.

Colonel Muhammad Abu Dan, who supervised the recovery operation, said teams spent three consecutive days searching the site for more than 60 members of the family believed to remain buried. The operation recovered 55 bodies, allowing the family to hold a single joint funeral procession, expected early next week

Occupied West Bank: Israeli army storms Qalandiya, shields settler pogroms

Israeli settlers have carried out fresh attacks on several Palestinian villages across the occupied West Bank, while the Israeli army shut down access routes near Jerusalem, according to Quds News Network and Wafa, the Palestinian news agency.

The army entered Qalandiya refugee camp north of occupied Jerusalem on Friday evening, opening fire and throwing stun grenades.

To the northwest of Ramallah, dozens of settlers attacked the home of a Palestinian in Umm Safa village, damaged his property and set up a tent close to nearby houses under the protection of the Israeli army. On the city’s northeastern side, the army sealed off the village of Al-Mughayyir, stopping residents from getting in or out, while settlers started provoking Palestinians on farmland nearby.

South of Bethlehem, settlers backed by soldiers entered the village of Khalet a-Nahlah and beat a local resident. When neighbours tried to help, Israeli troops fired tear gas and stun grenades, causing multiple inhalation injuries.

Israeli military raids West Bank towns at dawn

The Israeli military has raided the towns of Nazla al-Sharqiya and Qaffin, north of Tulkarem, at dawn in the occupied West Bank.

Palestinian news agency Wafa, quoting local sources, reported that several Israeli military vehicles toured the streets, conducting searches and sweeps. However, no arrests were reported.

Israeli forces arrest Bethlehem man and raid West Bank town

Israeli forces have arrested a Palestinian from Bethlehem, while a settler has damaged property in the Khalayel al-Luz area southeast of the governorate, reports the Palestinian news agency Wafa.

A security source told Wafa that soldiers detained Karim Asakra at the Container military checkpoint east of Bethlehem. Separately, a settler brought sheep onto the property of the Swaieq family home in Khalayel al-Luz, vandalized belongings, and damaged surrounding trees.

In a separate incident on Saturday, Israeli forces raided the town of Kafr Aqab, north of occupied Jerusalem. Local sources told Wafa that Israeli soldiers entered Airport Street and the Institute area in Kafr Aqab, firing live ammunition and stun grenades near the entrance of the nearby Qalandiya camp.

No injuries were reported, Wafa said.

US ambassador Huckabee visits families of Palestinians killed by settlers in occupied West Bank

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee is in the occupied West Bank town of Turmus Aya in the Ramallah district, where he is meeting with US nationals and families of those killed by Israeli settlers and soldiers.

The US envoy is being briefed on the situation in the town, which has been subjected to continuous attacks by settlers who have seized thousands of dunams of Palestinian land.

Huckabee: Israel must guarantee safety, security of West Bank population

“The Israeli government must guarantee the safety and security of the population in the West Bank,” US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has said at a news conference in Turmus Aya.

He also said he visited the West Bank town, which has a heavily American-Palestinian population, “to understand the situation on the ground”.

The United States ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, has arrived in the home of a Palestinian-American citizen.

He’s meeting with not just municipal officials, but also Palestinian Americans who live in the village of Turmus Aya and have been seeing firsthand the effects of settler pogroms and violence, part of the whole escalation by settlers in the occupied West Bank.

They want the US ambassador to relay the message that this is systematic violence being practiced against Palestinians, that it’s continuing and that they need actual change.

Huckabee, who has been vocal about the settlers in their siege of Palestinian homes, was himself the target of their rage: In one attack on a Palestinian village, the settlers wrote slogans not just against Palestinians, but also against him.

Huckabee’s West Bank visit sends a clear message that will fall on deaf ears in Washington

Alon Pinkas, a former Israeli ambassador, says US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee’s visit to the West Bank is “largely symbolic”.

“It’s symbolism, because his visit, as much as it is covered by the media, is not going to change American policy,” Pinkas said.

Huckabee has labeled some of the settlers carrying out violence as terrorists, which is a “clear message”, Pinkas said – particularly coming from an evangelical Christian who “believes in the Jewish rights over the West Bank”.

Nonetheless, the Trump administration “doesn’t seem to care enough” about settler pogroms or the rights of Palestinians for it to “actually pressure the Israeli government”, Pinkas said.

Turmus Aya in ‘desperate need of attention’ amid Israeli settler violence, resident says

Palestinian-American Ruwan Alqam was hoping to bring her children the “true Palestinian life” when the family relocated to Turmus Aya from Texas four months ago.

But every time the family leaves their occupied West Bank home, “we’re hit with roadblock after roadblock. Settlers after settlers,” she said, shortly after attending this morning’s meeting with US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee.

On a recent day trip to Nablus, the family was unable to get home as Israeli settlers attacked their car with rocks, Alqam said.

“They’re not being held accountable for their actions – endangering Palestinians is a fun activity,” Alqam said of the settlers, describing the violence as “not a minority” among Israelis who illegally occupy Palestinian territory.

Huckabee was “very receptive” to the experiences of Turmus Aya residents, Alqam added.

“We are in desperate need of attention here,” she said.

Israeli settlers enter occupied West Bank town of Turmus Aya during Huckabee visit

Two Israeli settlers breached the occupied West Bank town of Turmus Aya just meters away from where US ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee was meeting with Palestinians, Wafa reports.

The duo entered the eastern part of the town in an ATV about 100 meters from the site of Huckabee’s visit, municipal council member Awad Abu Samra told the Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Huckabee held meetings with local Turmus Aya officials and Palestinian Americans to discuss ongoing Israeli settler attacks.

He called on Israel to “guarantee the safety and security” of West Bank residents.

US ambassador to Israel condemns settler ‘lawlessness’

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has said that American citizens living in Turmus Aya shared accounts with him of vandalised homes, threats against children, and violence and intimidation during a town hall meeting he held in the town, according to a post on X.

“I support Israelis living in Judea/Samaria [the Israeli term for the occupied West Bank] where they have right to be, but no student of Bible supports lawlessness,” Huckabee wrote.

Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank have been deemed illegal under international law.

The remarks continue a shift Huckabee has made over recent months. A longtime supporter of Israeli settlements who has argued Israel has a biblical claim to the West Bank, Huckabee first broke from that posture in July, condemning attacks on the Christian village of Taybeh as “sacrilege” and “terror”.

In mid-August, after settlers besieged Palestinian homes in the village of Qusra, including one belonging to a dual US citizen, he went further, calling those involved “Israeli terrorists”, a term US officials have historically avoided applying to Jewish settlers. This week he said such attacks are doing “serious damage” to Israel’s international standing.

Israeli army arrests 3 Palestinians in Jenin raids

Israeli forces have arrested one woman and two men during raids on the occupied West Bank city of Jenin, the Palestinian Wafa news agency reports.

Adwan al-Krouz and his mother were arrested during a raid on a shelter for displaced people from the Jenin refugee camp, which the Israeli army has forcibly emptied, Wafa said. Israeli forces also arrested Mohammad Nasser al-Saadi during a separate raid in eastern Jenin city.

The army earlier spread out across Jenin governorate and searched several homes.

Israeli forces raid occupied West Bank town of Yabad, set up military checkpoint

Israeli forces have carried out another raid in the Jenin governorate, the Palestinian Wafa news agency reports.

Police vehicles descended upon the centre of Yabad town and pursued several people on motorcycles, before setting up a military checkpoint where they stopped residents and checked identification documents.

As we’ve been reporting, the Israeli army earlier arrested three people in Jenin following multiple raids across the governorate.

Israeli forces detain a number of residents in the Yarza community, east of Tubas in the occupied West Bank

Israeli military forces have detained a number of Palestinian residents in the northern Yarza community, east of Tubas, the Palestinian news agency Wafa is reporting.

Mukhlis Musaeed, head of the Yarza village council, told Wafa that Israeli military forces detained several farmers in the community and are preventing them from working.

He added that Israeli forces and settlers continue to impose restrictions on residents in the community in an effort to force them to leave.

Tubas is a Palestinian city in the northeastern occupied West Bank, and the administrative center of the Tubas Governorate. It sits north of Nablus and close to the Jordan Valley, near the border area between the West Bank and Jordan.

The governorate includes a number of Bedouin and herding communities, like the Yarza, in its eastern, more rural areas, that have frequently faced pressure from Israeli settlement expansion and military activity, given their proximity to the Jordan Valley and to illegal Israeli settlements and outposts in the area.

Israeli demolition notices threaten 14 schools in occupied West Bank’s Masafer Yatta region

Israeli authorities have issued demolition and stop-work notices targeting 14 schools across the Yatta educational directorate in the occupied West Bank, leaving 1,600 students in the Badia and Masafer Yatta regions at risk of being left without classrooms.

Describing the scale of the crisis across the region, Bassam Gabr, the head of education in Yatta, told Al Jazeera: “We have 18 schools located in these regions, 14 of which have received demolition notices.”

Gabr added that legal filings have been submitted to secure precautionary injunctions ahead of the new school term, noting: “September 6 is a decisive date for us to start the academic year in these schools. As you can see, even though they are caravans and do not represent a safe environment, this is what we have.”

An Israeli district court recently rejected legal appeals seeking to halt or freeze the demolition orders. Israeli officials cited building without required Israeli-issued permits in Area C and alleged proximity to an archaeological site as grounds for the order.

Students and administrators cited daily hazards, including proximity to Israeli bypass roads and mounting settler violence. Local officials said that if the structures are destroyed, classes will proceed using tents or out in the open.

Israel’s settlers’ council providing drones to West Bank settlers for reconnaissance

A group representing illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank is providing armed settlers with surveillance drones and aerial reconnaissance equipment to track Palestinian communities and facilitate the expansion of outposts and settlements on Palestinian land, our colleagues on the ground are reporting.

In August, Human Rights Watch reported that settler “land preservation patrols” deploy these drones to monitor rural Palestinian farming and grazing lands, track livestock and gather aerial photographs.

The resulting photography and coordinates are routinely compiled into petitions submitted to the Israeli Civil Administration to secure swift demolition orders against Palestinian homes, tents and agricultural structures across Area C.

Hamas leader condemns Israel’s seizure of land in West Bank town of Qabatiya

Hamas has condemned Israel’s seizure of nearly 7.5 dunams (1.85 acres) of land in the West Bank town of Qabatiya.

“The occupation’s confiscation of new areas of land in the town of Qabatiya is an escalation in the open settlement war on the West Bank, land confiscation, and the acceleration of Judaisation, annexation, and displacement processes,” Hamas leader Abdul Rahman Shadid said.

Israeli authorities issued the military order yesterday targeting specific plots in Qabatiya’s land blocks 28 and 34, according to the Palestinian Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission. Maps attached to the order indicate plans to construct a military road and a new military tower in the area, officials said.

The order is valid for 60 days and grants the Israeli Defence Ministry full control over the land while allowing affected landowners only 24 hours to file objections.

Israeli settlers unleash dogs on Palestinian women and children in occupied West Bank

Israeli settlers, protected by the Israeli army, have unleashed dogs on children and women at the entrance to al-Shuhada Street in central Hebron, one of several attacks reported across the occupied West Bank today by the Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Wafa also reported the following attacks in the occupied West Bank:

• The Israeli army stormed al-Mughayyir village, northeast of Ramallah, firing tear gas canisters near homes, as well as near a house mourning two Palestinians killed earlier. No injuries have been reported.
• Two Israeli settlers riding a four-wheel motorcycle stormed the eastern part of Turmus Aya, northeast of Ramallah, about 100 meters (328 ft) from where US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee was touring the town, according to local sources.
• An Israeli settler has vandalized property and broken several trees surrounding the Suweis family home in the Khala’il al-Luz area of the Bethlehem governorate, local sources said.
• Israeli settlers have grazed sheep on Palestinian agricultural land in the village of Burqa, east of Ramallah, damaging crops and olive trees in the area.
• In the Tubas and Northern Jordan Valley governorate, Israeli settlers have stolen water barrels used by residents to store water for their livestock, according to local sources.
