Reserve Brigadier General Oren Avman says diplomatic efforts in Gaza and Lebanon “are largely ineffective … half-baked in terms of what we will actually achieve”, according to an interview with a radio station cited by the Israeli media.

Avman, who is a former commander of the Kfir Brigade, made the remarks on a recent report that said Netanyahu permitted Shin Bet officials to have direct contact with Hamas officials during the war.

“I don’t know if we’re being played or if a false reality is being manufactured – on top of the state’s overall conduct, which already draws plenty of valid criticism – but in this false narrative, we’re pretending to run a process that will ultimately disarm Hamas,” he was quoted as saying by The Jerusalem Post.

“Over the last generation, state entities have virtually ceased to exist in our strategic reality. We have to recognize that – it’s been the case for over 25 years.”

Israeli army says attack killed Hamas members in Gaza

An attack in the Jabalia area in northern Gaza on Saturday killed Abd al-Fattah Abu al-Aish, an elite Nukhba Forces commander in Hamas’s military wing who entered Israel during the October 7, 2023 attack, according to an Israeli military update.

Raed Adel Mohammed Alyan, a member of Hamas’s military wing, was also killed in the strike, it claimed.

The two suspects promoted plans against Israeli forces and civilians, and systematically violated the ceasefire, the statement said.

Netanyahu claims political opponents ‘will leave Gaza, Lebanon’, ‘establish Palestinian state’

In a interview with Israel’s Channel 14, Netanyahu claimed that his top electoral opponent, former Israeli army chief Gadi Eisenkot, would likely join a coalition that, if in power, would withdraw from Lebanon and Gaza, and allow the establishment of a Palestinian state.

“You know very well what they will do,” Netanyahu said. “There will be a fire sale here. They will immediately leave Lebanon. They will leave Gaza. They will leave Syria. And they will establish a Palestinian state here. And they say it. They conceal it, but that’s what they think.”

“And this won’t just be some Palestinian state. It will be a Palestinian state backed by major powers, and that will be the beginning of the end of Israel,” Netanyahu said.

Eisenkot has repeatedly said he opposes a Palestinian state.

Israeli forces storm Tubas city, fire stun grenades

Wafa quoted local Palestinian sources as saying that Israeli military patrols stormed the city and raided a shop in the city centre, with soldiers firing stun grenades at locals.

Israeli president condemns colonist siege of Palestinian homes in Qusra

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has condemned colonist violence in the occupied West Bank village of Qusra, saying it is unlawful.

He said the attack was “a stain on Israel’s face” that demanded “firm and decisive action” against those responsible.

“I stand with the [army], which is doing its best,” Herzog wrote in Hebrew on X.

Since August 9, colonists have besieged three Palestinian homes in the village, trapping families inside and cutting access to water, electricity and other essential supplies. A fourth home was targeted on Saturday.

Escalation in the West Bank was by importing the euphoric manifestation that comes with demonization and nazification of Palestinians in Gaza into the West Bank in October 2023.

During all these months, no single member of the political war belligerent had condemned the escalation. They just kept funding, instigating, fueling and supporting the escalation, that has now turned into outright colonist terrorism under protection of the armed war belligerent.

Now they are forced to do because the siege of the houses in Qusra has international attention.

Six Palestinians injured as Israeli army fires tear gas in refugee camp south of Tubas

Six Palestinians have been injured after the Israeli army fired tear gas during a raid on the Far’a refugee camp south of Tubas, in the northern occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.

It said crews treated all of the victims for tear gas inhalation at the scene.

Israeli forces seal only entrance to West Bank village for more than 20 hours

Israeli forces have kept the sole remaining entrance to the occupied West Bank village of al-Mughayyir shut for more than 20 consecutive hours, blocking residents from entering or leaving.

Amin Abu Aliya, head of the village council, told the Wafa news agency that the gate had been mostly closed since Friday, opening only for a few minutes at a time.

Speaking to the Anadolu agency, he said it is closed in the morning to stop workers from going to their jobs, and when anyone tries to return. The aim, he says, is to drive Palestinians from the area.

Israeli forces raided the village on Friday over a claim that a colonist’s sheep had been stolen, an allegation he rejects. Three Palestinians were wounded, and an ambulance was blocked from reaching them.

He said more than 50 colonists entered the north of the village during the raid, assaulted a farmer and took 25 sheep.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said al-Mughayyir has been under a “suffocating siege” for about 20 days, with residents at times allowed only two hours a day to pass through the gates.

• A foreign activist was abducted from Umm al-Khair before being detained by Israeli police.
• Colonist attacks against Palestinians also took place in Arrabeh, Jalud, al-Mughayyir, Burqa, Masafer Yatta, Khallet al-Hummus, Yasouf, Khalayel al-Louz and Nablus.

Palestinian prisoner group denounces Ben-Gvir’s raid on women’s prison cell

The visit by far-right Israeli security minister Ben-Gvir at a Palestinian women’s prison cell in the occupied West Bank has been condemned by the Palestinian Prisoners Club as incitement.

“Ben-Gvir’s appearance in the female prisoners’ section, filming them, and publishing the scenes, is an attack on their human dignity,” the Palestinian Prisoners Club told Al Jazeera.

Since taking office, Ben-Gvir has adopted more harsh policies against Palestinian prisoners, including reducing food and water rations, restricting family visits, shortening shower times and eliminating other basic privileges.

 

Hamas denounces Ben-Gvir’s raid on Palestinian women’s prison cell

Hamas has condemned far-right Israeli security minister Ben Gvir’s raid of a Palestinian women’s prison cell, calling it “moral depravity”.

“We warn of the danger of continuing to turn the occupation’s prisons into open arenas for violations, humiliation, threats, torture, and murder,” it said in a statement.

“We also condemn the exploitation by the [Israeli] occupation’s leaders of the suffering of our male and female prisoners as cheap election propaganda.”

Netanyahu accused of escalating West Bank tensions after October 7 fallout

Israeli military sources have expressed concern that, ahead of elections, Netanyahu is deliberately escalating tensions in the occupied West Bank to divert attention away from the failures of October 7, Israeli news outlet Haaretz is reporting.

The report claimed that Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir doubts the government’s intentions regarding the West Bank, given the ruling coalition’s declining popularity in opinion polls, and “wants to avoid involving the army in new security complications driven by political considerations”.

It added that that many on the right – including Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich – do not hide their desire for a more intense conflict in the West Bank that would allow them to justify a preemptive military move to topple the Palestinian Authority , followed by the occupation of the land and a large-scale displacement of the population.

The report comes amidst rising colonist violence, or pogroms, perpetrated under the protection of the Israeli army.

Israeli police raid UNRWA-run training centre in West Bank again

Israeli security forces have carried out a raid in Qalandia refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, including the UNRWA-run Qalandiya centre, reports the Wafa news agency.

It is the second time the center has been raided by Israeli police this week.

Far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir participated in the earlier raid, saying “there is no place for the agency in Jerusalem and Israel”.

Senior Israeli police official says colonists in Qusra should have been arrested

Moshe Pinchi, an Israeli district police commander assigned to the occupied West Bank, has blamed the Israeli military for not arresting Israeli colonists who have carried out a campaign of violence against Palestinians in Qusra, including besieging homes.

“The [Israeli military] should have detained the rioters instead of dispersing them,” Pinchi said in an interview with Israeli radio station 103FM.

“The incident occurred in Area B [of the West Bank]. Responsibility for the area lies with the military. … Border police forces operating under the army were there. They should have carried out the arrests.”

The Israeli army said on Saturday that it had responded to reports of violence in Qusra and “removed” the colonists.

At least two Palestinians have been injured after Israeli forces fired live ammunition during a colonist pogrom near the village of al-Mughayyir in the occupied West Bank, Palestinian medical sources tell Al Jazeera.

The incident happened when the Palestinians confront colonists attacking Palestinian homes west of the village northeast of Ramallah.

Amin Abu Aliya, the head of the village council, told Al Jazeera that Israeli forces are facilitating the pogroms by only allowing colonists access into the village and its vicinity.

Israeli settler pogrom targets Palestinian homes in occupied West Bank’s al-Mughayyir

Israeli settlers have raided Palestinian homes in the village of al-Mughayyir, northeast of Ramallah, as part of escalating settler pogroms in the occupied West Bank.

What has Netanyahu said about Israeli settler pogroms in the West Bank?

Israeli politicians have launched a coordinated campaign to minimize the public relations damage from recent pogroms by Israeli settler in the occupied West Bank.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement strongly condemning “criminal acts of violence” in Qusra and Jalud, blaming it on a “handful of rioters” who violated the law, interfered with the military and harmed Israel’s standing in the world.

Netanyahu publicly stated that he expected law enforcement authorities to “arrest the rioters and bring them to justice”.

However, this public outrage contrasted sharply with the reality on the ground.

A rioter is a person who takes part in a noisy, violent, and uncontrolled group disturbance in a public place.

In the West Bank, and under the Fourth Geneva Convention (Article 49), the transfer of a occupying power's civilian population into occupied territory is considered illegal under international law.

When these individuals engage in unauthorized violence against the occupied population, international bodies and human rights organizations categorize these actions as colonist violence, vigilante attacks, or violations of international humanitarian law, rather than simple rioting.

Israeli minister posts AI-generated video taunting Palestinian prisoners

Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has shared an AI-generated video on his social media channels that appears to ridicule Palestinian prisoners.

The animated video depicts Ben-Gvir removing icons representing food from above the heads of a group of people in prison uniforms, before they are sent into a prison on what looks like an assembly line. The video ends with the prisoners leaving the facility looking frailer and apparently despondent, with one of them in tears.

Ben-Gvir’s post comes after he earlier shared footage of himself visiting a prison holding Palestinian women in the occupied West Bank, boasting that he is responsible for the harsh conditions they live in.

After one prisoner seen in the footage told the Israeli minister they had not been able to shower in days or receive adequate medical treatment, Ben-Gvir responded: “The good conditions in the prisons are over. This is the current situation, and I am directly responsible for everything. I am pleased with these conditions.”

Seven injured in al-Mughayyir as Israeli forces lock down occupied West Bank village

Local sources say that seven people have been injured [in the occupied West Bank village of al-Mughayyir near Ramallah], most of them by live ammunition. It’s not clear if the live rounds were fired by Israeli forces or Israeli settlers.

One of the pictures coming out of the village shows Israeli settlers standing near the Israeli army soldiers.

This is something we’ve been reporting on for a while – that Israeli soldiers are part of what is happening. Not only are they not intervening to prevent settlers from attacking Palestinians, but their mere presence empowers settlers to continue their attacks.

According to some of the people in the village, it seems that the Israeli forces who raided al-Mughayyir after the settlers attacked it have withdrawn to the entrance of the village. But that entrance has been locked down and, according to residents, besieged.

The checkpoints only seem to be preventing Palestinians from going home, not blocking Israeli settlers, who continue to bypass them.

Site of latest pogroms in occupied West Bank surrounded by illegal Israeli outposts

While it’s difficult to find a place in the occupied West Bank that is not affected by settler attacks, al-Mughayyir has been a particular target. Israeli settlers have been wreaking havoc there, not just attacking Palestinians, but stealing their livestock, the source of their livelihood. They hope that Palestinians will eventually move their homes.

The ultimate goal of Israeli settler violence is clear: displacement. The moment settlers push people out of their homes and their land, they start to establish illegal settler outposts. These outposts start with a tent, shack or caravan. They are eventually recognized by the Israeli government and then become illegal settlements.

As far as al-Mughayyir goes, it is surrounded by at least 10 illegal Israeli settlements and outposts. Most of them are shepherding outposts which the settlers use to bring their sheep in to graze.

Al-Mughayyir is an example of what is happening elsewhere – it is just more intense.

‘Settlers come night and day,’ says al-Mughayyir resident

Bassam Abu Assaf, a resident of the Palestinian village of al-Mughayyir that Israeli forces and settlers raided today, says such incursions have grown increasingly frequent in recent months.

“Settlers come night and day, openly, and attack passing cars and break the windows of the cars,” Abu Assaf said at the entrance of the village, which Israeli forces closed off.

“More than 20 cars have suffered severe damage, in addition to injuries to people – in the head, the foot and so on,” he added. “They beat us with sticks, batons and stones – every person who passes through this street.”

“How can people go to their work?” he asked. “And how can people live their daily lives under these daily practices that are being committed against us?”
