UN rights office for Palestine calls out Israeli army over attacks on Gaza police

The UN Human Rights Office in the occupied Palestinian territory says the latest killings of Palestinians by Israeli forces in Gaza may be war crimes, highlighting the ongoing attacks on the enclave’s police.

“These incidents are a stark reminder that, despite occasional drops in the number of reported attacks, civilians throughout Gaza remain exposed to persistent, unpredictable, lethal harm,” it said in a statement on Friday.

It said the reported killings of at least 22 Palestinians in Gaza between August 13 and 19 alone, including women and children, “may amount to war crimes and other atrocity crimes”.

The UN office also called the “pattern” of attacks on police personnel and facilities in Gaza “alarming”, including an attack on Gaza City’s municipal police headquarters on Wednesday that killed eight officers and a 13-year-old girl.

It says it recorded 18 Israeli attacks on police personnel across Gaza since January, with 77 Palestinians killed, including six children and four women.

Under international humanitarian law, it says, police are protected civilians, unless they are actively and directly participating in hostilities.

“It is hard to see any ‘military necessity’ of Israel’s ongoing attacks across a decimated landscape, which continue to kill and maim civilians, including children and police personnel,” the statement quotes Ajith Sunghay, head of the UN Human Rights Office in Palestine, as saying.

“The right to life is the foundational right for all. But it seems in Gaza, there is no respect left for human rights as death, injury and destruction continue day after day,” he added.

More than 350,000 patients need medicines in Gaza: Charity head

Mohammad Abu Afash, the director of the Palestinian Medical Relief Society in the Gaza Strip, says more than 350,000 patients need medicines, while the quantities entering the territory are insufficient.

Israeli military says it killed Hamas commander in central Gaza

Israel’s military says the person it killed in an air strike on a home in Deir el-Balah in central Gaza earlier today was a Hamas commander.

In a post on X, it identified the victim as Sharif al-Hasnayat, claiming he was a “platoon commander” in the Deir el-Balah Battalion of Hamas’s military wing.

It claimed he posed an “immediate threat” to Israel, and that he had also led efforts to “rehabilitate the underground infrastructure” of Hamas.

We dismiss the claim as there are many similar claims documented showing no confirmation by Hamas and no evidence.

Gaza running out of places to bury the dead

Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza has seen thousands of bodies buried in makeshift sites.

Graveyards are tightly packed with victims, and many of the graves are marked with just a stone and a piece of paper with the name of the deceased written on it.

Dead Palestinians have been buried in gardens, tents or on the grounds of displacement camps, schools or hospitals.

The cost of burial materials, such as headstones, have increased as a result of shortages.

Israel has also destroyed more than 40 cemeteries across Gaza since October 7, 2023.

Palestinians face rising colonist attacks in Area B of occupied West Bank

Palestinians in Qaryut, south of Nablus in the occupied West Bank, say increasing Israeli colonist attacks and military restrictions are making life increasingly dangerous and forcing families to leave.

The village is surrounded by at least seven illegal colonies and outposts.

Residents say colonists are taking over more land and threatening Palestinian families, while Israeli soldiers prevent some farmers from accessing their olive groves.

Why Israeli tenders for illegal E1 West Bank colony prompted outrage

Israel has opened tenders for the construction of 1,234 Israeli homes in the occupied West Bank, advancing a major illegal colony expansion which rights groups say will, in effect, sever Palestinian territory in two.

The move is part of Israel’s plan to create the so-called “E1” area on a stretch of Palestinian land, ultimately creating a continuous Israeli colony “corridor” between occupied East Jerusalem and the large colony of Ma’ale Adumim, 7km (4.5 miles) east of Jerusalem. This would further disrupt Palestinian movement between the northern and southern West Bank, and isolate communities on each side. It is illegal under international law.

The United Nations Human Rights Office has previously described the E1 project as a “grave and unlawful step to consolidate annexation”, while the UN secretary-general has said colony construction there violates international law and runs directly counter to UN resolutions.

Muslim World League condemns Israel’s E1 colony plan

The Muslim World League (MWL) has strongly condemned Israel’s illegal E1 colony plan in the occupied West Bank, warning that it threatens the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.

The condemnation comes after Israel opened tenders for the construction of 1,234 colony homes in E1, part of a wider plan to create a continuous Israeli colony corridor between occupied East Jerusalem and the illegal Ma’ale Adumim colony.

The NGO described E1 as a “dangerous plan” and condemned “all illegal Israeli colony policies” in the occupied Palestinian territory, saying such actions violate international law and UN resolutions and “undermine all peace efforts”.

It called on the international community to ensure an immediate end to colony policies and other measures aimed at “altering the geographical and demographic character” of the occupied Palestinian territory.

The organisation also reiterated its support for Palestinians’ right to establish an “independent and sovereign Palestinian state” under a two-state solution, which it described as the “only path” towards a just and lasting regional peace.

Israeli plans for E1 colony to ‘cut the West Bank in half’: Israeli rights group

Michal Braier, head of research at Bimkom, an Israeli human rights organization, says that last year they filed a petition against the E1 colony plans in the occupied West Bank.

“The petitions were filed with Palestinian residents of E1. There are about 3,000 residents living in that area, and what we expect to happen is that they will all be forcibly expelled from the area, making it a completely Jewish-only territory,” Braier told Al Jazeera from West Jerusalem.

“We have to understand that while the plans are for about 2,000 dunams or something like that, the area of E1 where they’re planning to build the separation barrier around it is much, much larger,” she added.

Braier explained that the separation barrier is why they are saying that the colony plans will “cut the West Bank in half”.

“It will basically leave Palestinians with very little access between the northern part of the West Bank and the southern one,” she said.

Former French, UK diplomats call on governments to ‘uphold international law in Palestine’

More than 100 people, including former British ambassadors to the UN and former directors for the Middle East at the French Foreign Ministry, have signed a letter published in the French newspaper Le Monde, calling on their governments to work together to uphold international law in the Palestinian territory.

“Our two nations believe that those responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity must be held to account. Only then can our governments rebut the accusation of double standards. That is why they must act together to uphold international law in Palestine,” the letter read.

It accused Israel of seeking “to destroy any prospect of an independent Palestinian state, showing contempt for the law, the rulings of the International Court of Justice and countless UN Security Council resolutions”.

Earlier this week, France, Britain and other countries released a joint statement condemning Israel’s E1 colony in the occupied West Bank.

GCC condemns illegal Israeli colony expansion in occupied West Bank

Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi has condemned Israel’s continued colony expansion in the occupied West Bank, including plans for the E1 project.

Advancing the plans “represents a blatant challenge to international legitimacy” and undermines the rights of the Palestinian people, Albudaiwi said in a statement.

“These practices by the Israeli occupation forces undermine the prospects of achieving peace and threaten international and regional efforts aimed at establishing an independent Palestinian state,” he said.

He called on the international community to act to halt colony expansion and measures aimed at changing the geographical and demographic reality of the occupied Palestinian territory.

Albudaiwi reiterated the GCC’s support for an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

New Israeli colonies to lead to more West Bank ‘tragedies’: Ex-UK envoy

Nicholas Hopton, former British ambassador to Iran, Qatar and Yemen and nonresident fellow at the Atlantic Council:

“Many, including myself, have voiced disquiet at the way that the war has been prosecuted in Gaza and [how] the Israeli government has not only permitted, but on occasions actually facilitated, colonist violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.”

The decision to pen a letter follows a “move by the Israeli government to allow colonies to be created in the West Bank in a way that would realistically prevent a future Palestinian state being created there”, he continued.

The letter calls on the French and British governments to put pressure, including economic measures, on Israel to avoid the establishment of new illegal colonies.

“It’s in the interests of all, not only the Palestinians and the Israelis themselves, that this doesn’t happen, because it will create a longer-term, irreconcilable problem and store up future violence and future tragedies, which we can avoid if the right steps are taken now,” Hopton said.

‘Action, not words’ must be taken against Israel, former ambassador says

Peter Millet, a former British ambassador to Libya and one of over 100 ex-diplomats who have signed a letter calling for the UK and France to jointly sanction Israel, said that they are asking for “action, not words”.

“Our ministers over the last few months and years have issued statements of criticism, of condemnation and so forth, but as the letter makes clear, this is the time now where we need to see action on trade, action on settlements, more support for aid to go into Gaza, and the ending of the arms trade, the provision of arms to Israel,” he said.

He added that he would like to see the UK government “openly supporting the views of the International Criminal Court of Justice”, which has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

Action must also be taken against Israeli settlers, who are “looking to forcibly displace the Palestinian population”, he explained, and force them to cross into Jordan.

He also pointed to the action of extremists entering Al Aqsa Mosque with the support of the Israeli military.

“We cannot stand by and see this continually happen, and in Israel, which is explicitly saying it will never accept a two-state solution,” Millet said.

“The UK and France recognized the state of Palestine last year, and we’re seeing that that objective is actually being erased by Netanyahu’s government,” he added.

Millet stressed the need to press for action, saying that if action is taken on trade with Israel, this could be something that would “actually have some repercussions in Israel itself”.

Abu Dhabi-based Muslim group condemns Israeli E1 settlement plans

Abu Dhabi-based Muslim Council of Elders condemns Israel’s so-called “E1” settlement plan, calling it “a flagrant violation of international law”.

The Abu Dhabi-based group also said Israel’s plans to divide the West Bank from Jerusalem with this project are “a serious threat to efforts aimed at achieving peace in the region”.

The council, which is chaired by Ahmed el-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Egypt’s al-Azhar and one of the world’s most prominent Muslim scholars, also condemned settler violence against Palestinians carried out “with the support of the Israeli occupation authorities”.

The group called on the international community to “assume its responsibilities and take urgent action” to put a stop to settlement expansion and protect the Palestinian people and their rights.

The Muslim Council of Elders says it is an “autonomous international organisation” founded in Abu Dhabi in 2014 with the goal of fostering peace within Muslim and non-Muslim communities, and advancing dialogue, tolerance and coexistence.

US pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC sees political standing fall: Report

Allies of Mike Rogers, Michigan’s GOP nominee for the US Senate, have asked AIPAC not to advertise on his behalf ahead of the November midterm vote, Axios has reported.

The news outlet said the request was a sign that the pro-Israel lobbying group’s political standing has fallen, amid voters’ anger over the war in Gaza.

Axios described Rogers as a “staunchly pro-Israel Republican”, who nonetheless appeared to believe that AIPAC’s public support would be a liability.

Doctors Without Borders condemns latest arrest of Palestinian doctor

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has condemned last week’s arrest of Dr Dima Mohammed Amin in the occupied West Bank and demanded her release.

Amin, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, was reportedly arrested on Tuesday at her home in Ramallah.

“Dr Dima is the latest victim in Israel’s systematic campaign of hunting down and detaining Palestinian medics,” MSF said.

“They have not been charged with any offense; they were simply treating patients. That is not a crime.”

According to Medical Aid for Palestinians, a UK-based aid group, Amin had recently spoken publicly against the arrest of another Palestinian doctor, “raising concerns about the risks faced by Palestinian healthcare workers who speak out in support of their colleagues”.

UN rapporteur brands Israeli army as ‘the most immoral’ amid latest killings in occupied West Bank

Francesca Albanese, UN special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territory, has condemned the latest killings of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

“The MOST IMMORAL ARMY is waging genocide while those in power, as so often in history, refuse to see the victims or recognize their rights to life and self-determination,” she wrote on X, referring to Israel’s army.

“Eighty years after WWII, in the age of human rights built after that war, this is all the more abhorrent,” she added.

Her post included an image of another post commenting on the death of Fathi Khazem, a Palestinian man reportedly shot and killed by Israeli forces in his home in Jenin on Friday after resisting an arrest attempt.

The Israeli soldiers prevented an ambulance from reaching him and left him to bleed to death before taking his body, according to the Palestinian Wafa news agency.

Israeli forces arrest a Palestinian man during Nablus raid

Israeli soldiers arrested one person from the city of Nablus in the occupied West Bank at dawn, Wafa reports.

Local sources told the Palestinian news agency that Israeli forces raided several homes and shops in the Old City and the commercial market, and detained Attallah Abu Saleh.

Israeli forces arrest four Palestinians in Hebron

Israeli forces have arrested four Palestinians and erected several military checkpoints across the occupied West Bank, according to the Wafa news agency.

Three Palestinians were arrested after Israeli forces raided and searched homes in the town of Sa’ir, northeast of Hebron, Wafa reported. A fourth Palestinian was arrested while tending to livestock near his home southeast of Yatta city.

Israeli forces also erected checkpoints at entrances to Hebron and surrounding towns, villages and refugee camps, and closed several main and secondary roads with iron gates, concrete blocks and earth barriers.

Separately, Israeli forces set up a checkpoint at the entrance to Battir village, west of Bethlehem, where they stopped and searched Palestinian vehicles and checked people’s identification, according to Wafa.

Israeli forces arrest two Palestinians northeast of Jenin, occupied West bank

Israeli forces have arrested two men from the village of Faqqua, northeast of Jenin, in the occupied West Bank, according to the Wafa news agency.

According to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society, soldiers arrested Omar Abdul Karim Bashir and Nizar Imran Hamad Masad after raiding and searching their homes.

Israeli forces also raided several other homes in the village, tampered with their contents, and conducted field interrogations.

Israeli forces have arrested a young Palestinian man from Beit Ula, west of Hebron, Wafa reports.

Three Palestinians have been shot by Israeli forces in ar-Ram, north of Jerusalem, according to the Jerusalem Governorate. They were fired at near the separation barrier and were brought to hospital for treatment, Wafa news agency reports.

The Palestinian Red Crescent has said that two people have also been injured in a settler attack in the village of Arrabeh, south of Jenin in the occupied West Bank.

The settlers attacked several homes in the Naqab area of the town and assaulted residents. Those injured were taken to hospital.

The Palestinian Red Crescent is reporting that 11 people were injured after Israeli soldiers fired tear gas during raids on the towns of Tubas and Taysir, in the occupied West Bank.

The Wafa news agency said four children were among those who suffered from suffocation due to tear gas inhalation.

Israel’s chief rabbi says Palestinians ‘are not a people’ and ‘have no rights’

In an address at West Jerusalem’s Gush Katif Museum, Israel’s chief rabbi, David Yosef, denied that Palestinians exist as a people and said they “have no rights”.

He also claimed Gaza and occupied West Bank cities for Jews, and called for Gaza’s destruction and Jewish settlement.
