UN Security Council in favor of Lebanon on UNIFIL extension amid US opposition
Diplomatic sources are saying that every UN Security Council member except the US supports Lebanon’s request to extend the country’s UNIFIL mandate.
The current UNIFIL mandate is due to expire at the end of the year. UNIFIL, which stands for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, is a peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon primarily responsible for maintaining peace and stability in areas along the border with Israel.
The US and Israel reportedly oppose extending UNIFIL’s mandate, accusing it of failing to rein in Hezbollah.
In August 2025, the UNSC voted to phase out the peacekeeping mission by the end of 2026. However, the situation in Lebanon has changed dramatically since then, with Israel and Hezbollah currently locked in conflict.

The report added that due to the wind speed, many forest trees and dry grass have been left burning, which has made it difficult for firefighting teams to reach the area.

That’s according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA). The report did not elaborate on the results of the attack.

Israeli artillery shells hit area between Haddatha and Haris in southern Lebanon
Israeli artillery has shelled an area between the towns of Haddatha and Haris in southern Lebanon, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA).
NNA also reported that an Israeli drone fired a guided missile at a building on Nabih Berri Avenue in the city of Nabatieh.
The missile struck a wall on the building’s upper floor, with no injuries reported.

Israeli forces have blown up a social care home for the elderly in the southern Lebanese town of Hula, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA).
NNA also reported that an Israeli drone fired a guided missile at an open area between Jarmaq and Kfar Reman.
Earlier, Israeli artillery shelled the outskirts of Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh, while a large explosion was reported between the towns of Markaba and Rab el-Thalathine.

Alternative to UNIFIL requires international presence, says Lebanese parliament speaker
Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri has said the United States’s refusal to renew the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon’s (UNIFIL) mandate requires an alternative UN peacekeeping force with European and US backing to operate in southern Lebanon.
In an interview with Asharq Al-Aswat, Berri, one of the most influential Shia politicians in Lebanon, warned that without a UN mandate, there would be no legal basis for an international presence in the area.
This presence is essential to the Lebanese army’s efforts to extend state sovereignty over its territories, which is conditioned on full Israeli withdrawal, he said.
Berri rejected bilateral agreements between Lebanon and Israel as an alternative to international presence in the South in the interview, as long as Israel refuses to implement what was agreed under the US-sponsored “framework agreement”.
Despite his initial rejection of the framework agreement, Berri proposed expanding it to the district level based on administrative divisions in the south.
UNIFIL’s mandate in southern Lebanon is set to expire on December 31.

Hezbollah does not want to disarm because ‘it is simply taking orders from Iran’: US State Department
Hezbollah does not want to talk to the Lebanese government, the United States or Israel because “it is simply taking orders from Iran”, a US Department of State spokesperson said.
The spokesperson stated that Hezbollah can begin talks with the Lebanese state when it is ready to disarm. The US State Department is already in dialogue with the Lebanese government.
“The Trilateral Framework clearly states that the Lebanese Government is the sole legitimate interlocutor for discussions about the future of Lebanon and on behalf of the Lebanese people,” the spokesperson said.
The US stands with the Lebanese people and wants Lebanon to be a secure and sovereign country, the spokesperson was quoted as saying by the US embassy.
“As Ambassador [Michel] Issa has said, we want nothing more than for them [Hezbollah] to hand over their weapons.”
