Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi has a job that’s among the most powerful and influential in Iran – and one in which the shadow of death constantly hovers.

Vahidi has taken command of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps at a particularly challenging moment, amid a joint US-Israeli war on his country that has killed more than 1,000 people, devastated Iranian cities, and assassinated much of the country’s senior military leadership.

A product of the IRGC from its earliest days in the late 1970s, Vahidi rose through the ranks during the 1980s, holding key positions in intelligence and in the military. Iranian state media reports that he led the elite Quds Force from 1988 to 1997.

The Israeli military has confirmed that its warplanes are engaged in a new “wave of strikes on infrastructure” in the Iranian capital.

In a statement, Israel described the strikes as “broad” but gave no other details.

A correspondent in Tehran said a little earlier that the sound of warplanes and explosions could be clearly heard in the skies above the capital city.

Iran interim council meets for fourth time to discuss supreme leader selection: Report

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has presided over the fourth meeting of the interim leadership council, which has been put in charge of running the country following the US killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

According to Iran’s reformist Shargh newspaper, the council has discussed the gathering of the Assembly of Experts, which is tasked with selecting the new supreme leader.

During the session, Pezeshkian and fellow council members Supreme Court Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei and Guardian Council member Ayatollah Alireza Arafi also discussed the country’s response to the ongoing US and Israeli military operation against the country.

Iranian media reports Israeli embassy in Bahrain’s Manama targeted

Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency has reported that overnight attacks on Bahrain’s capital, Manama, targeted the city’s Financial Harbour Towers commercial complex.

The news agency said the complex was attacked as it was the location of the Israeli embassy in the city.

Reuters news agency reports that an Iranian drone was intercepted and destroyed in the vicinity of the complex.

Residential areas, university vicinity targeted in latest strikes in Tehran

Residential areas in Tehran were among the locations hit in the latest US and Israeli strikes on Friday morning, according to Iran’s English-language news channel Press TV.

A follow-up strike was also caught on video as a Press TV journalist was reporting on the aftermath of an earlier strike.

The Iranian news outlet Mamlekate also reported that the vicinity of the country’s premier educational institution, Tehran University, was also hit on Friday morning, according to a video it posted on X.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from the wave of strikes.

Operation against Iran moving to ‘next phase’: Israeli military commander

Israel’s military chief has warned that the US-Israeli campaign against Iran was moving to “the next phase” and would “further dismantle the regime and its military capabilities”.

“We have additional surprises ahead which I do not intend to disclose,” Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir said in a televised statement.

Zamir issued the statement as a wave of new attacks was reported in the Iranian capital Tehran in the early hours of Friday.

It happened while a reporter from the state broadcaster was reporting live near the site.

Iraqi armed group claims drone attack on Jordan

The Iraqi armed group Saraya Awliya al-Dam has claimed responsibility for a drone attack against a “vital” target in Jordan.

In a statement posted on the group’s Telegram channel earlier today, the group declared that the strike was in response to the killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The group did not provide further details, and Al Jazeera could not independently verify their claims.

More than 3,000 homes in Iran damaged by US-Israeli attacks: Red Crescent

Pir Hossein Kolivand, president of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, says the US-Israeli attacks have damaged 3,643 civilian sites, including 3,090 homes. Also damaged are 528 commercial and service centers, 14 medical or pharmaceutical facilities and nine Red Crescent facilities, he said.

Most of the targets, he added, were in “densely populated residential areas”.

US, Israeli attack kills 20 in Iran’s Shiraz

Jalil Hasani, deputy governor of Iran’s Fars province, has said recent US and Israeli strikes have killed 20 people and injured 30 in the city of Shiraz.

He was quoted in Iranian state media as saying the attack took place in a residential part of the city’s Zibashahr area, killing “innocent citizens”.

Earlier, two paramedics also being killed in a recent attack in Shiraz.

Iran to gradually restore administrative activities

Iran has announced that it will gradually restore administrative activities, with all ministries, organizations and executive bodies based in Tehran province to operate with 20 percent of their employees present on-site from Sunday, March 8. The announcement also said:

• All female employees in the province will work remotely.
• Certain banks will remain open.
• Operational units of service‑providing bodies, municipalities, medical centers, and military, law‑enforcement, and security institutions are exempt from this directive.
• All managerial ranks in Tehran province are also excluded from remote work and are required to be present at their workplace.

The directive comes despite ongoing US-Israeli attacks on the country.

Iran’s next supreme leader may already have been chosen but not publicly declared

Zohreh Kharazmi, an associate professor at the University of Tehran, dismissed reports that eight members of Iran’s Assembly of Experts boycotted the process of choosing the next supreme leader as “rumours”.

Kharazmi also hinted that a supreme leader may already have been chosen but not yet publicly declared.

“It’s very rational to preserve the life of the next leader… it’s a very rational security protocol,” she said.

The professor also said that Kurds are in support of Iran, contrary to reports that Iranian Kurdish armed groups may have consulted with the US in recent days about whether, and how, to attack Iran’s security forces in the western part of the country.

Iranian forces yesterday also launched an operation targeting Kurdish groups in their semi-autonomous region of neighbouring Iraq.

“I think this is… political propaganda… Iranians will suppress them, and I don’t think they can do anything efficient,” said Kharazmi.

“What I see in Tehran is a high social solidarity and support for the Islamic republic.”

Israel claims to destroy Khamenei’s ‘underground bunker’

Israel’s military claims 50 of its fighter jets attacked what it described as an “underground bunker” in Tehran that had been built for the late supreme leader.

In a statement, it claimed the compound “extended beneath entire streets in central Tehran” and included meeting rooms, adding that senior government officials continued using the facility after Khamenei’s killing.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry claims US, Israel targeted Tehran primary school

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei has accused the US and Israel of carrying out an attack hitting a primary school in Tehran’s Niloufar Square.

In a post on X, Baghaei shared footage of what appeared to be school classrooms with blown-out windows and extensive debris. He did not mention casualties.

Israel’s army tells residents of industrial area in Iran’s Qom to flee

Israel’s military has issued a forced displacement threat for residents in the Shokouhiyeh industrial area of Qom, Iran.

In a post on its Farsi language X page, Israel’s military shared a map of the area with a designated zone marked in red lines where it said it will operate “in the coming hours”.

“You are requested to immediately leave the designated area shown on the map,” said the Israeli military. “Remaining in this area puts your lives at risk.”

  198 of those killed are women.
• Those killed include eight healthcare workers.

Israelis ‘need to know how long this will take’

The Israeli public still supports the war on Iran and Hezbollah, but it needs to know how long this will take because the cost is real, the damage to their buildings is real, and the effect to the economy will be felt by ordinary people.

The number of Israeli soldiers injured in confrontations with Hezbollah fighters is also increasing. There is no let-up in Iranian missiles. While the number of missiles fired in each volley is lower, they are bigger, and the impact is bigger.

The extent of that damage is unclear because the information is tightly controlled by the Israeli military censor, but we do know from witnesses who have been posting videos that many of the strikes are in the vicinity of a compound housing the Defense Ministry in the heart of Tel Aviv.

We know that many of the missiles fired from Lebanon are also targeting areas where there is weapons manufacturing and intelligence assets in northern Israel.

How much Israel is hurting is unknown, but the population certainly needs answers.

Israel claims to strike ‘over 400’ targets in western Iran

The Israeli army says it hit more than 400 targets in Iran today, including ballistic missile launchers and storage facilities for unmanned aerial vehicles.

In western Iran’s Shahroud area, Israeli forces destroyed a truck that was transferring air defence systems to another location, the army claimed on Telegram.

The army attached an aerial photo of what appeared to be a truck on an unidentified road. There was no immediate response from Iran.

Moscow expresses solidarity with Iran, offers condolences after killing of Khamenei

Russia’s deputy foreign minister has visited Iran’s embassy in Moscow to offer condolences following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In a statement, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko visited the embassy yesterday and conveyed the condolences of Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to the Iranian people.

Rudenko also signed a book of condolences for the family of Khamenei and for those killed in what Moscow described as “US-Israeli aggression”.

According to the ministry, Rudenko condemned the assassination of senior officials of a sovereign state.

During a meeting with Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, Rudenko also expressed solidarity with the Iranian people.

Israeli attack in Qom kills at least two: Official

At least two people have been killed in a Israeli attack on a residential building in the city of Qom, according to Tasnim news agency, quoting a local official.

The strike hit a house on Kargar Street in Qom, said the deputy political and security officer of Qom governorate, Tasnim added.

The official said that “more than four points” across the province were targeted in today’s attacks.

Several Iranian Red Crescent facilities, including “relief posts and warehouses”, have sustained significant damage since the war on Iran began a week ago, Jagan Chapagain of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has said.

“Communities on all sides are already paying a heavy price, with deaths and injuries, and damage to homes, schools, hospitals, and other vital civilian infrastructure,” he said in a post on X.

“These and all Red Cross Red Crescent personnel and infrastructures must be protected during this challenging time.”

Pezeshkian accuses Netanyahu of ‘deception based on geography’

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of “deception based on the geography of the audience”.

To Iranians, Pezeshkian said, Netanyahu talks of “freedom” while calling them “Amaleks” when speaking to his “Zionist audience”. The Amalek were a biblical tribe associated with irrational evil and anti-Semitism. And to Americans, the Iranian president said, Netanyahu talks up the Iranian “nuclear threat”.

US, Israeli strikes in Iran outpace recent air campaigns: Airwars

The opening phase of US and Israeli strikes on Iran has involved a higher tempo of targeting than any recent American or Israeli air campaign, according to new analysis by monitoring group Airwars.

“By comparing publicly released targeting figures from both the US and Israeli militaries with historic data, the analysis found the initial days of the campaign hit significantly more targets per day than any campaign in recent decades”, it claimed.

Even compared with Israel’s initial bombardment of Gaza, Airwars said only around half as many targets were hit in those first days in Gaza as have been declared in the early phase of the Iran operation.

Amir-Saeid Iravani, Iran’s ambassador to the UN, has said that the US and Israel “have demonstrated that they recognize no red line in committing their crimes”.

Speaking to the UN Security Council in New York, Iravani said the duo are attacking “densely populated” civilian areas and infrastructure, including schools, medical, recreational and sports facilities.
