Israel, US making ‘historic gains’ in Iran conflict, Netanyahu’s office says

A spokesperson for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel and the US have made “historic gains” in the conflict against Iran.

Shosh Bedrosian also claimed the attacks were needed as Iran was rebuilding its atomic bomb program in “new underground bunkers” and because there were indications of an Iranian plan “to attack Israel and American forces in the Middle East”.

She did not provide evidence for the claims.

The UN’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, however, has said it has not found any evidence of an Iranian effort to build nuclear weapons while Oman, which was mediating the recent US-Iran talks, said negotiations were making progress when the attacks took place.

Israeli forces target ballistic missile launcher in Iran’s Qom

A spokesperson for the Israeli military says its air force has “attacked and destroyed” a ballistic missile platform that had been preparing to launch an attack from the Iranian city of Qom.

In a statement posted on X, Avichay Adraee said that the Israeli air force also destroyed an air defense system dedicated to targeting aircraft in the Iranian city of Isfahan. The strikes were aimed at degrading Iran’s defense as well as expanding Israel’s “air control in the region”, he wrote.

We know Avichay Adraee as a colonel in the Israeli armed belligerent forces, where he served as the head of the Arab media division of the armed belligerent's spokesperson's unit. He was involved in the dystopian terror and terrorism on Palestinians and mass forced dislocation in Gaza.

He rarely post this kind of messages on his X-account but forced dislocation orders, now in Lebanon.

The Israeli military says Iran has launched a new round of missile strikes targeting Israel.

In a post on X, the military said the country’s Iron Dome defence system is operating “to intercept the threat”.

Multiple massive blasts shake Tehran through the night

The strikes have been continuing over the past few hours and into Thursday morning. From time to time, we hear the sound of multiple massive blasts across the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Of course, we are also hearing reports from other cities about similar strikes targeting military headquarters and political centers.

The latest report on casualties has put the civilian death toll at more than 1,000, with over 6,000 reported injured as a result of the recent strikes, according to the Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, statements from the Revolutionary Guard said that retaliatory attacks continue, including the 17th and 18th waves of strikes.

The Revolutionary Guard is claiming that they have targeted Israel’s Ben Gurion international airport and some of the country’s advanced radar systems.

A US Marine veteran has been forcibly removed from a hearing in Congress after he staged a protest against Trump’s decision to launch a military operation against Iran.

Brian McGinnis, who is running for a Senate seat in the upcoming elections from the Green Party, was heard shouting, “No one wants to fight for Israel”, as multiple security officers pushed him out of the room.

A video clip posted by CBS News journalist Alan He showed Senator Tim Sheehy of Montana, also a US veteran, helping the Capitol Police in lifting and pushing McGinnis out of the room. He was later quoted by CBS as saying that “decided to help out and deescalate the situation”.

Iran postpones the farewell ceremony for Khamenei

There may be several reasons for this decision.

First and foremost, it could be because we are dealing with continuous wave of attacks and Iranians fear that any ceremony could be a target for attacks by the US and Israelis.

The Iranian leadership are also in the process of selecting a new supreme leader. There are constitutional processes for this, but we are not expecting that appointment so soon.

One of the members of the Assembly of Experts, which chooses the new leader, came out and said time is needed for the necessary consultations.

This is a most significant decision, given the huge amount of power and authority that the supreme leader holds, and whoever takes that office will have a final say in domestic and foreign policies. So they are taking their time for a meticulous appointment.

The constitution says this should happen as soon as possible, but we do not know how soon due to the prevailing uncertainty in the country.

Video shows destruction of residential buildings in Tehran

A video posted by Iran’s state channel Press TV shows rows of buildings destroyed by the latest Israeli air strikes on Tehran.

Some people were seen walking through the debris next to the hollowed-out buildings, which Press TV described as residential.

One frame showed a parked vehicle destroyed and covered with dust, while another angle showed a backhoe clearing a mound of shattered concrete and other debris.

Iran reports damage to water, electricity supply facilities

Minister for Energy Abbas Aliabadi says the US-Israeli attacks have caused damage to water and electricity supply facilities in various parts of the country, according to the IRIB broadcaster.

But he said repairs are continuing to ensure uninterrupted service delivery.

People should be careful about their water and electricity consumption, he added.

Restrictions on public gatherings to ease in Israel as air defence holds

The Israeli air defense system is pretty competent and does stop the majority of missiles from getting through.

In recent days, the Israelis have decided the situation has been easing somewhat. They’ve decided to lessen some of the restrictions that have been placed on public life.

There’s been a five-day shutdown of events and gatherings in place. But from 12pm (10:00 GMT) on Thursday, gatherings of up to 50 people are allowed – provided people can get to shelters – and workplaces are going to reopen.

Schools and educational facilities are staying shut.

It’s still been a pretty rocky night in Israel with at least three waves of Iranian missiles coming in. No injuries have been reported. There has been in the last hour or so another air raid in the Western Galilee region.

Continuing Iranian strikes ‘testing tolerance’ of Israeli public

The Israeli army has launched attacks against the government infrastructure in Iran while still intercepting and trying to intercept more Iranian missiles coming in, as well as rocket fire and drones from Lebanon.

This is testing Israel’s capabilities as well as the tolerance of the Israeli public.

People in Israel woke up to news that there would be some easing of restrictions on public gatherings and some return to normalcy in workplaces. Israelis are being told by their government that everything is being done to limit Iran’s ability to retaliate.

There has been a drop in strikes, but Iran is using higher-grade missiles that are larger and causing more damage when they fall, even if it’s just the debris.

The cost of damage is expected to be about $2bn just in the first week. That’s in addition to the cost of the war effort itself. So there are efforts to mitigate some of those losses by returning to economic activity, including repatriating the more than 100,000 Israelis abroad.

Expressway in Iran’s Lorestan among several areas targeted by Israel: Report

At least two people were injured when Israeli jets struck the Khorramabad-Borujerd expressway overnight, leaving part of the major thoroughfare in northwestern Lorestan province out of service.

The victims were on a bus travelling on the other side of the expressway when the attack took place, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported, quoting a provincial official.

Another official told Tasnim that the expressway was one of the eight areas targeted by Israel in the province since the US-Israel joint attack began.

In all, the US and Israel launched at least 66 air raids on the province, according to Tasnim.

US-Israeli forces have attacked 105 civilian sites in Iran so far: Red Crescent

The Iranian Red Crescent Society says it has recorded 1,332 attacks by US and Israeli forces in Iran since Saturday, with raids documented at 636 locations, including at least 105 civilian sites.

These include 14 medical facilities and seven Red Crescent buildings, it said, adding that at least 174 cities have been hit.

Iran says US, Israel ‘deliberately target civilian areas’

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has accused the US and Israel of intentionally hitting civilian areas during the war.

No power vacuum expected in Iran leadership transition

Iran’s leadership structures are continuing to function, and there is unlikely to be a power vacuum, according to Hassan Ahmadian, an associate professor at the University of Tehran.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, Ahmadian said a leadership council alongside the Supreme National Security Council is currently overseeing major strategic decisions.

“These bodies make strategic decisions and then take them to the leadership council,” which can ratify or amend them, he said, describing the process as consistent with how political decision-making normally works in Iran.

Ahmadian added that the succession process is under way in line with Iran’s constitution, with deliberations reported to be taking place within the Guardian Council.

“I don’t see a scenario where there will be a power vacuum,” he said.

The WHO says it has verified more than 10 attacks on Iran’s health infrastructure amid the US-Israeli campaign, killing four healthcare workers and injuring 25.

“WHO has verified 13 attacks on healthcare in Iran and one in Lebanon,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news conference.

Another WHO official at the same briefing added that four ambulances were also affected and that hospitals and other health sites suffered minor damage due to strikes nearby.

Israeli military claims to knock out 300 Iranian ballistic missile launchers during war

Israel’s military says its air force has hit and disabled more than 300 ballistic missile launchers in Iran since the war began on Saturday.

It says it has specifically focused on launchers in western Iran to minimize Iran’s ability to fire at Israeli territory.

Iran says more than 3,600 civilian sites damaged in US-Israeli attacks

More than 3,600 civilian sites have been damaged in attacks it attributes to the United States and Israel, according to figures released by the Iranian Red Crescent, cited by the Iranian government on X.

The head of the Iranian Red Crescent reportedly said 3,643 civilian locations had been targeted so far, including 3,090 homes, 528 commercial centers, 13 medical facilities and nine Red Crescent centers.

The official said several major hospitals had been damaged, including Khatam Hospital, Gandhi Hospital and other rehabilitation and welfare centers.

Iranian authorities said some patients were injured when hospital structures collapsed during the strikes, while facilities, such as Valiasr Burn Hospital, had been rendered inoperable.

The Iranian Red Crescent said reports documenting the damage had been submitted to the International Committee of the Red Cross and other international bodies for potential legal action.

Israeli chief of staff says ‘achieved near-complete air superiority’ over Iran

Israeli chief of staff Eyal Zamir says the country’s military has “achieved near-complete air superiority” over Iranian skies on the sixth day of its joint war with the US on the Islamic Republic.

“Our forces paved the way to Tehran within 24 hours and destroyed 80 percent of its air defence systems,” Zamir said during a press conference.

“The Israeli Air Force has carried out 2,500 strikes and dropped over 6,000 munitions,” said Zamir, adding: “We have destroyed 60 percent of Iran’s missile launch sites, but we have not eliminated all threats.”

Zamir also said that “the war is proceeding according to plan” and that the military was now “moving to another phase in the battle with Iran”.

This next phase “will focus on undermining the Iranian regime, and we will intensify our strikes against the regime’s facilities and military capabilities”, said Zamir.

Israeli chief of staff Eyal Zamir turns his attention to Lebanon

Zamir also discussed Lebanon during his televised press conference, saying he had ordered troops to expand the area under Israeli control in the country’s south, as the country’s ongoing operation against Lebanese group Hezbollah intensified.

“We are striking with force, on the front line and deeper in Lebanon. I instructed Israeli army forces to move forward and deepen the line of control along the border, while establishing positions at key points in southern Lebanon,” said Zamir.

The Israeli military says it detected new missiles launched from Iran towards Israel and the country’s defense systems were operating to intercept them.

“A short while ago, the [army] identified missiles launched from Iran towards the territory of the State of Israel. Defensive systems are operating to intercept the threat,” the military said.

Buildings in central Israel damaged in strike barrage: Report

Citing emergency services, Haaretz is reporting damage to multiple buildings across central Israel amid a renewed wave of Iranian strikes.

Journalists at AFP, meanwhile, reported the sound of two waves of simultaneous explosions in Tel Aviv shortly after 21:00 GMT.

Sirens continued to ring in Tel Aviv, central Israel and the occupied West Bank, Haaretz said.

Iran condemns strike on Tehran’s Azadi Sports Complex

Iran’s government has condemned a US and Israeli strike on the Azadi Sports Complex in Tehran.

In a post on X, Iranian officials said a strike hit the 12,000-seat stadium at the complex, describing it as a site deeply embedded in the country’s collective memory.

Iran’s sports minister, Ahmad Donyamali, visited the site and called the attack a violation of international law and the Olympic Charter, urging global accountability.

Iran said the stadium was heavily damaged in the strike. The United States and Israel have not commented on the claim.

Cluster munitions appear to detonate over central Israel

A short while ago, Iran’s IRGC announced what it said was a combined drone and missile attack in Tel Aviv and areas in central Israel.

They said they included in the attack package the Kheibar Shekan, with a cluster munition warhead.

We have seen videos of what look like cluster munitions detonating over central Israel and raining down submunitions across a pretty wide area. There are no casualties that are being reported.

Kheibar Shaken means “the fortress buster”. It’s a pretty new weapon in Iran that has only been operational since 2022, and it’s quite sophisticated. It has a maneuverable warhead that – when in its descent phase – opens up so that about 20 submunitions come out of it, each with about 2.5 kilos (5.5 pounds) of explosives.

When it’s spread over a big area, it can cause a significant amount of destruction.

Cluster munitions are banned under an international treaty, but only if the countries themselves have signed that convention – and neither Israel nor Iran has signed.
