Israel launches ‘broad-scale’ strikes on Tehran

Israel’s military said it has started a “broad-scale wave of strikes” on targets in the Iranian capital.

The announcement comes as Iran’s state broadcaster reports an explosion in the western part of Tehran.

The military said earlier that it had detected another round of Iranian missile fire headed towards Israel.

A series of explosions were heard in the Israeli commercial hub of Tel Aviv following the Iranian launches.

The US State Department said it has made a determination approving a possible sale of munitions and military support to Israel worth $151.8m.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio determined that an “emergency exists that requires the immediate sale to the Government of Israel”, according to a statement from the State Department.

“This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a strategic regional partner that has been, and continues to be, an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East,” the statement added.

The emergency package includes BLU-110A/B general-purpose bombs, along with logistics and support services.

Israel says Iran has launched new wave of missiles

The Israeli military said missiles have been launched from Iran, with defence systems working to intercept the threat.

Residents in relevant areas have received a mobile phone alert, according to the military.

“Defence systems are operating,” the military said.

The Israeli military said residents are now permitted to leave protected places “following a situational assessment”.

Iranian ayatollahs call for expediting announcement of supreme leader

Ayatollah Hossein Nouri Hamedani and Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi have been quoted by the Tasnim news agency as saying that the announcement of late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s replacement has to be hastened.

Nouri Hamedani said it was important “to disappoint the enemy and to preserve the unity and solidarity of the nation, which is currently intact, and to support our powerful armed forces defending the country against the aggressors”.

Makarem Shirazi said “the timely realization of this important matter will lead to … the even better organization of affairs.”

Israel says missiles launched from Iran towards its territory

The Israeli military says missiles have been launched from Iran towards Israel.

In a statement on X, the Israeli army said it had identified missiles heading towards Israeli territory and that interception systems were being activated.

Israel claims it destroyed 16 Iranian aircraft

The Israeli military says it destroyed 16 aircraft belonging to the IRGC’s Quds Force, which is tasked with carrying out operations beyond Iran’s borders, during the overnight attacks on Tehran.

In a statement, the Israeli army said its air force carried out a “broad wave of attacks” across the Iranian capital, including strikes on Mehrabad Airport.

The military claimed the airport was used by the Quds Force as a hub to transfer weapons and money to armed groups across the Middle East, including Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

The claims could not immediately be independently verified and there was no immediate comment from Iranian authorities.

Israel targets IRGC air force headquarters

The Israeli military says it has attacked the “central air defense command center” of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Air Force, “In the heart of Tehran.”

It said it struck air defense systems, headquarters, warehouses and other structures near the centre.

It added that it also hit a site used to produce and launch ballistic missiles, which it claimed included warehouses for Quds Force combat equipment.

The Israelis are claiming that they have hit “more than 300” targets in Iran in that same time period.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has said in a statement that responding to the US and Israel’s “brutal military aggression” is the country’s inherent right to self-defense.

It said that Tehran would continue to take action “until the aggression stops or until the United Nations Security Council fulfils its duty by identifying the aggressors.”

The statement said that under international law, “states are prohibited from allowing their territory to be used, directly or indirectly, to inflict harm and damage on other states.”

US approves sale of more than 20,000 bombs to Israel

The Trump administration has bypassed congressional review to approve the sale of more than 20,000 bombs to Israel worth about $650m, according to US officials.

The State Department said Secretary of State Marco Rubio had determined that an emergency existed, allowing the administration to waive the usual congressional review process.

US officials also said Israel would buy a further $298m worth of munitions through direct commercial sales.

A UN report published in December 2024 said similar heavy munitions had likely been used by Israel in densely populated areas of Gaza during its genocidal war on the Palestinian territory.

Netanyahu tells Lebanon to enforce 2024 ceasefire

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told Lebanon it is up to them to enforce the 2024 ceasefire agreement.

“Your responsibility is to disarm Hezbollah,” he said in a video statement. “If you do not do this, Hezbollah’s aggression will result in disastrous repercussions for Lebanon. It is time for you to take your destiny into your own hands. We will do all that is necessary to defend our communities and citizens.”
