This comes after the Israeli military said it had “begun a wave of extensive strikes against launch sites, defense systems, and additional infrastructure” in Iran.

Hezbollah claims attack on Israeli forces in Metula

The Lebanese armed group says it has fired rockets at Israeli forces in the town of Metula in northern Israel.

The claim came after it announced carrying out a missile attack on the naval base in Haifa.

A council of three, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, is governing Iran as it awaits the formal selection of a new supreme leader by the Assembly of Experts.

Yesterday, one of the buildings belonging to this assembly was targeted in the city of Qom. But local media says this is an old building and no work related to the process was taking place there. There’s been no statement on the exact number of casualties.

The Assembly of Experts is to make a important decision. There are a couple of names of the person who could become the next supreme leader.

All in all, the country’s leadership has faced a major blow, as several important military figures in the country – including the chief of the staff for the armed forces, the commander in chief of the IRGC, the defence minister, and the secretary for the Defence Council – have been killed.

That adds to the complicated relationship between the political side of the country and the military side of the country, and this is all creating a very complicated calculus in the process for the appointment of the supreme leader.

Israel intercepts rockets from Lebanon

The Israeli military has said in the past hour that it identified several projectiles from Lebanese territory and that most were intercepted, except for one that fell in an open area.

This comes minutes after the military said Iran has also launched missiles towards Israeli territory.

Israel issues warning of more missiles launched from Iran

Israel’s military said missiles have been launched from Iran and defence systems are working to “intercept the threat”.

Members of the public have been requested to enter protective shelters and remain in place until a new announcement is made, the military said.

“Exit from the protected space will be permitted only after receiving an explicit directive; continue to act in accordance with Home Front Command directives,” it added.

Loud explosions heard in latest Iranian attack on Israel

The latest alert that came from the Israeli Home Front to the phones of Israelis – including going to shelters – went to almost all areas in Israel, mostly focusing in the centre and the north, but it was also further south.

And from where we are right now in Ramallah, we heard very loud explosions, and they could be because of interceptions.

But it seemed to be like a wide salvo, which hugely disrupts the ability of the Israeli defences to intercept all of these missiles.

As a result, according to Israeli media, there has been shrapnel from interceptions that fell in the area of Beth Shemesh, the city near the west of Jerusalem where shrapnel, or a missile, fell two days ago and killed nine Israelis.

So we will wait and see if the interception has succeeded in deterring these missiles or not.

No sign of de-escalation

There where massive explosions in Tehran.

Other reports were about blasts in different cities, including Karaj and Isfahan.

Yesterday, the Iranian Red Crescent said, that 153 cities were targeted and more than 700 people were killed.

The IRGC is saying it continues to strike back. They said the ground forces entered the battlefield operations in which 230 drones were engaged. Also, they were talking about a naval operation targeting US military ships.

There is a strategically significant statement from them related to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. They said it is impossible for any ships to pass through and said that more than 10 oil tankers were targeted.

In Tehran, there is no sign of de-escalation, and escalation is the name of the game.

Three-day ceremony commemorating Khamenei to begin in Tehran tonight

Supporters of the late Khamenei will gather at the prayer hall of the Grand Mosalla of Tehran tonight at 10pm (18:30 GMT), starting a three-day commemoration ceremony, according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency.

Details are still being finalized for Khamenei’s funeral, which will soon be announced, the report added.

Trump, Netanyahu attacked Iran to boost flagging approval ratings, analyst says

Shaiel Ben-Ephraim, an analyst with Atlas Global Strategies and a former Israeli diplomat, about the motives for the attack on Iran.

He said that the attack and its timing are all about domestic politics in both the US and Israel, with “very little strategic rationale behind it”.

“The current approval numbers for Trump are the worst they’ve ever been, some of the worst this early in a term I can remember. And there’s signs that the economy is going to get worse, so he really needs a distraction from that in the form of a war,” he said.

“And if you look at searchers on Google for the Epstein files, they’ve plummeted since this started. So, at least temporarily, it’s succeeding. It’s taking up Congress’ time and it’s taking up the media’s time.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he added, may be hoping the war boosts his own approval ratings before elections, which he said local media are reporting may be called as soon as June.

“The Gaza war of genocide wasn’t particularly successful in terms of getting Netanyahu public approval because the enemy there, Hamas, is kind of weak, and Israel didn’t do particularly well,” Ben Ephraim said, calling Iran “a more impressive enemy”.

Israel-US war on Iran is disrupting the global supply chain, with shipping closed in the vital Strait of Hormuz and planes carrying air cargo grounded by the closure of airspace in the Middle East.

That is expected to affect the availability and pricing of a wide range of goods, the longer the conflict continues, Patrick Penfield, professor of supply chain practice at Syracuse University, tells the AP news agency.

Clarksons Research, which tracks shipping data, estimates that about 3,200 ships, or about 4 percent of global ship tonnage, are idle in the Gulf, although that includes about 1,230 that likely operate only within the Gulf, the AP reports.

Meanwhile, about 500 ships, or 1 percent of global tonnage, are currently “waiting” outside the Gulf in ports off the coast of the UAE and Oman, according to the firm.

Israeli defense minister pledges to ‘eliminate’ any successor to Khamenei

Israel Katz says the Israeli military will attempt to kill any Iranian leader appointed to succeed Khamenei.

“Any leader appointed by the Iranian terror regime to continue leading the plan to destroy Israel, threaten the US and the free world and the countries of the region, and oppress the Iranian people, will be an unequivocal target for elimination,” Katz said in a statement.

“It does not matter what his name is or where he hides,” he said.

Katz went on to say that Israel will continue to act with the US to destroy Iran’s capabilities and “create the conditions for the Iranian people to overthrow” their government.

 

This is clearly using state terrorism as a method to achieve regime change by military force on a sovereign country. .

Threats to target Khamenei’s replacement part of ‘Israeli playbook’

Israel has been saying for a while that it will be able to get the supreme leader wherever he is hiding, and now they’re saying they will target whoever replaces him.

If you listen to Israeli analysts, they are treating the killing of Khamenei as a major success operationally, but also in terms of the intelligence that preceded that strike.

This is the mood that you are seeing in Israel – pride and a sense that they can continue to crack down on whoever will replace the supreme leader.

Khamenei ceremony postponed

A ceremony commemorating Iran’s late supreme leader in Tehran, originally scheduled to start at 10pm (18:30 GMT), has been postponed, according to Iran’s Tasnim news agency.

It quoted an official who cited logistical issues for the delay, including requests from people in different provinces to attend the ceremony.

Iran accuses US, Israel of ‘heinous crime’ after UNESCO site attacked

Iran has accused the US and Israel of committing a “blatant war crime” after a missile strike damaged part of a historic complex in Tehran.

Esmaeil Baghaei, the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson, says a missile caused damage to Golestan Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Iranian capital.

Baghaei added in a post on X it “represents a heinous crime aimed at erasing the cultural heritage of Iran”.

Iran is reporting about a missile. This could be the US-developed the AGM-114N Metal Augmented Charge (MAC), which is a variant of the US-developed AGM-114 Hellfire. This means that the Israelis are in the possession of the AGM-114N. They have the AGM-114 Hellfire mounted on their Apache helicopter gunships.

Hezbollah says it targeted Israeli base near Tel Aviv with drones

Hezbollah says it launched a swarm of attack drones at an Israeli military base.

In a statement, the group said its fighters targeted the “Tel Hashomer base”, which it described as a General Staff headquarters southeast of Tel Aviv, at about 12:00 GMT (2pm local time).

Hezbollah said the attack was carried out “in response to the criminal Israeli aggression that targeted dozens of Lebanese cities and towns, including the southern suburbs of Beirut”.

In a statement, the Lebanese group said it targeted the base at about 2pm local time (12:00 GMT), describing the attack as a response to Israeli strikes on Lebanon.

Earlier, the Israeli military said launches were detected crossing from Lebanon towards northern Israel, adding most were intercepted.

Alerts have gone off in northern and central Israel, after Israel’s military announced a new wave of incoming Iranian missiles.

‘No let up’ in attacks across Iran

Tehran has been hit very hard, and the bombardment is not reducing. Karaj, to the west of Tehran, and the city of Isfahan have also been hit over the past few hours.

There is talk of casualties across the board in many of those areas, including civilians. Twenty schools so far have been hit.

On the other hand, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard are saying they are also stepping up their attacks. They have sent missiles and drones across the region – striking many places in Israel, as well as bases in Erbil in northern Iraq and in Kuwait.

There is no let-up in attacks on Iran or the reaction by Iran. The war is getting more and more intense, and casualties are rising among civilians.

New blasts heard over Jerusalem after missile alert

New explosions have been heard overhead in Jerusalem, AFP journalists report, after the Israeli military warned of incoming Iranian missiles.

The blasts came about two hours after a previous salvo of missiles was detected and sirens blared.

New Iranian leader to be elected ‘in the coming days’

Israel’s army says it carried out a large-scale strike on what it described as a major Iranian military complex east of Tehran.

In a statement posted on X by Arabic-language military spokesperson Avichay Adraee, he said fighter jets targeted an area that housed “command centres” used by several branches of Iran’s security establishment.

The Israeli military said the site included headquarters linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Quds Force, the Basij, military intelligence and other security units, claiming that Iranian personnel were present at the complex at the time.

Iran threatens to target Israeli embassies worldwide if Lebanon mission attacked

Iran’s armed forces have threatened to target Israeli missions worldwide if Israel attacks Tehran’s mission in Lebanon, a military spokesperson says.

Abolfazl Shekarchi, spokesperson of the Iranian armed forces, said live on television, “If Israel commits such a crime, it will force us to make all Israeli embassies around the world our legitimate target.”

UN nuclear chief calls for ‘utmost restraint’ as US-Israel attacks Iran

The UN nuclear watchdog says facilities housing nuclear material in Iran suffered no damage in the recent US-Israeli strikes.

However, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Grossi called for the “utmost restraint” in the conflict to avoid a radiation threat to the Middle East during US-Israel attacks.

“Based on analysis of latest available satellite imagery, IAEA sees no damage to facilities containing nuclear material in Iran and, therefore, no radiological release risk at this time,” it said.

Near the Natanz site in the central city of Isfahan, “damage is visible at two buildings,” but there’s “no additional impact detected.”

The IAEA reported no impact at other nuclear sites, including the Bushehr facility in the southeast.

UN says 100,000 fled Tehran in first two days of war

The United Nations says an estimated 100,000 people fled Tehran in the first two days of the US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

“In Iran, an estimated 100,000 people left Tehran in the first two days following the attacks,” UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, said in a situation report.

“Latest reports indicate no increase in cross-border movements linked to recent events. The situation at the Islam Qala border crossing with Afghanistan remains stable with no significant changes observed,” it added.

Israeli military claims missile fire from Iran declining

Israel’s army says Iran has been firing fewer missiles at the country each day following strikes on launchers and stockpiles.

Military spokesperson Nadav Shoshani said the Israeli army “neutralised around 300 ballistic missile launchers”.

“We believe our operations against those missile launchers and against those stockpiles are an integral part of the fact that we’re seeing the amounts of missiles fired every day diminish,” Shoshani added.

Iran says dozens of civilian sites hit in US-Israeli strikes

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has accused the United States and Israel of striking dozens of civilian sites during attacks across the country.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said in a post on X that locations hit included hospitals, schools, residential areas and markets in several Iranian cities.

Among the sites listed were residential areas in Tehran’s Niloufar Square, hospitals in Tehran and Ahvaz, the Tehran Grand Bazaar, the historic Golestan Palace complex south of the capital and an elementary school in Minab.

Baghaei also said residential areas in Maragheh in northwestern Iran and a sports hall in Lamerd in Fars province were struck, claiming civilians were killed in both incidents.

In total, the Iranian official listed 33 sites and facilities that he said had been targeted in the attacks.

A group of nearly 30 United Nations special rapporteurs and experts have condemned the US and Israel’s “unprovoked attacks” against Iran, emphasizing that “we cannot pick and choose when international law applies”.

The targeting of civilians, educational institutions and medical facilities constitutes a “grave violation of international humanitarian law and human rights law”, the experts wrote, adding that the conflict now threatens to destabilize the Middle East as a whole.

They also expressed concern over Israel’s ongoing strikes in Lebanon and rejected the narrative – pushed by the administration of US President Donald Trump – that conflict with Iran could lead to a self-determined shift in Iranian governance.

“Unlawful military intervention must not be seen as the solution to the grievances of the Iranian people, nor would any future nuclear deal that does not address these wider grievances be mistaken for one,” the experts wrote. “Calls by the US and Israel for Iranians to seize control of their own government are reckless and put countless civilian lives at risk.”
