Houthi attack on port kills four, eroding truce with Yemen’s government

Six Houthi ballistic missiles struck Yemen’s government-held al-Makha port, killing at least four and setting fire to the facility.

Recent Houthi attacks have reignited fears of all-out war in Yemen, years after a 2022 truce halted fighting with government forces.

Houthis cannot hold Bab al-Mandeb ‘hostage’, says Yemen’s foreign minister

Yemen’s Foreign Minister Afrah al-Zouba has condemned recent Houthi missile strikes on the Port of al-Makha (Mocha), warning the group against holding the country’s maritime routes “hostage.”

In a post on X, al-Zouba said that “Bab al-Mandeb will not become a tool for pressure in the hands of an armed terrorist group, nor will Yemen, its national assets, and its maritime routes remain hostage to an open-ended war that serves Iran’s regional agenda and threatens neighboring states.”

On Wednesday, Yemen’s internationally recognized government accused the Houthi rebel group of killing at least six people and wounding 10 others in a double-tap strike on a cargo vessel in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.

“The renewed ballistic missile attacks by the Houthi terrorist militia on the Port of Mokha [al-Makha] and the western coast represent an attempt to strike one of the Yemeni people’s vital lifelines and undermine the state’s capabilities on one of its most effective fronts in safeguarding maritime security in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb and ensuring safe navigation,” al-Zouba said.

She added that supporting Yemen’s naval forces and coastguard is essential to securing international trade and regional stability.

Houthis used 6 ballistic missiles in al-Makha attack, Yemen army says

Yemen’s Houthi rebels used six ballistic missiles in their Friday attack on the port of al-Makha, the Saudi-backed government’s army has said in a statement.

One port security official was killed while two sailors went missing, the army’s statement said. At least 8 civilians were injured in the attack, it added.

Attacking the port, a key hub for the inflow of food and goods, as well as civilian infrastructure, shows the Houthi group’s “determination to impose a suffocating siege on the Yemeni people”, military spokesperson Colonel Majid al-Nuzaili added.

Yemen’s Mocha port halts operations after Houthi attacks

Yemen’s Mocha port has suspended commercial and maritime operations after being hit by more than 25 missiles ‌in Houthi attacks over recent days, the port’s director has said, according to Reuters.

The attacks killed seven people and caused an estimated $16 million in losses, the director told ‌a news conference.

Drone strikes kill three Houthi fighters and wound commanders in Taiz governorate

Yemeni government forces say at least three Houthi fighters have been killed during drone strikes west of Taiz governorate, in the southwest of the country, according to the Yemen News Agency, controlled by the Saudi-backed government of Yemen.

Several others, including field commanders, were wounded in the aerial strikes.

The Houthis have yet to comment on these claims.
