Israeli military forces are advancing into the village of Jumla in the Yarmouk Basin, near the occupied Golan Heights in the western countryside of Deraa province in Syria, according to our colleague on the ground.

Qatar condemns Israeli defense minister’s ‘illegal entry’ into southern Syria

Qatar has condemned the “illegal entry” of Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz into southern Syria, calling it a violation of Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a statement on Tuesday, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry urged the international community to compel Israel to abide by its agreements and end “its repeated aggression on Syrian territories”.

Katz traveled on Tuesday to Syria’s Jabal al-Sheikh (also known as Mount Hermon), a zone Israeli forces have occupied since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024.

“As long as there are threats, the [Israeli army] will remain here,” Katz said at the location, according to a video released by his office.

Syria’s Foreign Ministry issued its own condemnation on Tuesday, calling Katz’s crossing of the border a “blatant violation” of its sovereignty.

US state sponsors of terror list designed to ‘isolate’ governments, but people pay the price

The US on Monday removed Syria from its list of State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT), marking another major shift in Washington’s relationship with the country following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024 at the end of a brutal 14-year civil war.

This leaves only three countries on the list – Cuba, North Korea and Iran.

Iran expert Negar Mortazavi, citing Iran’s example, tells Al Jazeera the SSOT designation is intended to “isolate governments and create leverage”, but in practice often makes daily life harder for citizens by “deterring banks, businesses and humanitarian organisations from operating in those countries”.

“Decades of US policy toward Iran offer a clear example of how sanctions and punitive designations make life harder for ordinary citizens without producing the intended policy change,” Motazavi, Center for International Policy senior fellow and host of The Iran Podcast, said.

“Even years of maximum pressure and two full-scale wars have failed to force Tehran to change course.”

She added that by contrast, “serious and sustained diplomacy” had produced tangible changes in Iranian policy, with the JCPOA as the clearest example.

Israeli forces fire shells near Syrian town of Beit Jinn

Israeli forces have fired three artillery near the Syrian town of Beit Jinn, southwest of Damascus.

The shells were fired from the occupied Golan Heights towards a strategic hill overlooking the town. Israeli forces have previously used the hill to stage raids on Beit Jinn.
