Katz says Israeli forces to remain in Syria-Lebanon border area

Defense Minister Israel Katz says Israeli forces will remain in the Jabal al-Sheikh (Mount Hermon) area and Syria’s security zone “as long as there are threats”.

During a visit to the area, Katz said that the forces “look down on Damascus, 35 kilometers [21 miles] away; look down on the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon and Hezbollah’s stronghold; and, of course, watch over and protect the communities of the Golan Heights and the Galilee”, as reported by Israel National News.

Katz also used the visit to deliver a direct message to Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

“The message is clear to the president of Syria as well: When you wake up in the morning in your palace in Damascus and look up at Mount Hermon and see the [Israeli army], you know that we are here to protect our communities and our border,” Katz said. “As long as there are threats, the [Israeli army] will remain here to ensure our security.”

Syrian Foreign Ministry condemns Israeli defence minister’s visit of Jabal al-Sheikh

Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has slammed Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz for entering southern Syria to visit Israeli forces in Jabal al-Sheikh, calling it a flagrant violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a public statement issued by the ministry, Syria accused Katz of violating international law and the United Nations Charter. It added that Katz’s “illegal entry” constituted a breach of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, which prohibits crossing ceasefire lines.

Syria called upon the international community to take the necessary measures to “compel the occupying authorities to cease these repeated violations” and for Israeli forces to completely withdraw from Syrian territories.
