Israeli drone attack injures at least one person in southwestern Syria

An Israeli drone attacked a truck in the Beit Jinn village in southwestern Syria, injuring one person, according to our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic.

The attack comes days after Israel carried out air strikes on Syria’s Abu al-Duhur military airbase on August 18, hitting its runway and storage areas.

Katz says Israel struck Syrian airbase over alleged Turkish plans

Israeli defense minister Israel Katz says the military recommended last week’s attack on Syria’s Abu al-Duhur airbase based on intelligence indicating that Turkiye was planning activity there that could threaten Israeli security.

Katz said Israel conveyed a warning to the Syrian government “at the highest levels” before approving the attack and shared the intelligence with US officials. He said the strike went ahead after Syria did not respond to the Israeli demand.

Turkiye has rejected the claims. Its defense Ministry said no Turkish military delegation was at the base before or during the Israeli attack. Syria has also said there were no plans to establish a Turkish military base at Abu al-Duhur, although Turkish officers had visited the facility as part of military cooperation focused on training and the exchange of expertise.

Israel carried out eight air strikes on the airbase in northwestern Syria on August 18, hitting its runway and storage facilities. No casualties were reported. US envoy Tom Barrack described the attack as an “unnecessary escalation”, while Washington has said it is working on a deconfliction mechanism involving Turkiye, Israel and Syria.

Katz also criticised Barrack’s response, saying it was “full of inaccuracies” and positions that he claimed contradicted Trump’s stance on the occupied Golan Heights.

The Israelis began attacking Syria in 2013 because of Iranian presence in the country because their presence were seen as a threat.

After the fall of the Assad regime, the Israelis did not stop but continue attacking the country. So they bombed weapons and munition storage places belonging to the army because they were a threat to the Israelis. When the new government came to power, the Israelis kept continue attacking, now the new government.

Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon continue

Israeli warplanes have launched an attack on the area between the villages of Sarbin (Srobbin) and Rashaf in the Bint Jbeil district of the Nabatieh governorate in southern Lebanon, according to the country’s National News Agency (NNA).

We reported earlier that Israeli forces conducted heavy artillery shelling in al-Mansouri, around Bayt al-Sayyad and outside Majdal Zoun.

They also carried out an air raid in the area of Ali al-Tahir heights and extensive demolitions overnight.

Syria condemns Israeli drone attack on ‘civilian vehicle’ near Damascus

Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has released a statement in which it “condemns in the strongest terms” the targeting of a “civilian vehicle” by an Israeli drone west of its capital, Damascus.

It added that the attack, which resulted in several civilian injuries, was a “flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of Syria and a “blatant breach of international law”.

Such repeated attacks will only further destabilize the region, it said, while calling on the international community to assume its legal and political responsibilities.

Foreign minister says Israel has ‘no intention’ of escalating tensions with Turkey

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar has said Israel has “no interest” in an escalation with Turkey, amid tensions over last week’s attack on Syria’s Abu al-Duhur airbase.

“We are committed to preserving the status quo,” Saar said, adding that Israel prefers a diplomatic solution.

The foreign minister, however, stressed that Israel would not accept the establishment of Turkish bases in Syria.
