WHO to cut diesel supplies to 20 Gaza hospitals and health centers

The World Health Organization (WHO) will stop supplying diesel from September 19 to more than 20 hospitals and health centers in Gaza because of a funding shortfall, Gaza Health Ministry Director-General Dr Munir al-Bursh has said.

In a video message posted on X, al-Bursh warned of a “new crisis and further strangulation” at a time when the “small quantities that were available… were barely enough to keep the health facilities operational”.

“Their suspension will not merely switch off generators; it will shut down operating rooms and intensive care units, disable ventilators and oxygen systems, and endanger newborns in incubators, dialysis patients, the wounded, and people with chronic illnesses,” he wrote in a separate post.

“Ambulance services and the cold chain for medicines and vaccines will also be paralyzed. This is not a temporary fuel crisis. It is another link in a systematic policy of strangulation and deprivation, pushing hospitals toward complete shutdown and exposing patients to preventable death,” he added.

Al-Bursh called on the WHO, donors and the international community to take action against the decision.

Palestinian killed by Israeli sniper in northern Gaza

One Palestinian has been killed by sniper fire in eastern Jabalia camp in northern Gaza.

The man was in a displacement camp when he was shot by a sniper positioned on a high-rise crane, our colleagues reported.

Last week, Palestinians in northern Gaza held funerals for about 100 people, including 60 children, whose remains were recovered from the rubble of destroyed buildings.

Israeli attack on Gaza City kills two people

At least two people have been killed in an Israeli drone attack on the industrial area of Gaza City, according to a source from Gaza’s Ambulance and Emergencies.

Number of people killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza rises to at least 73,789

The Health Ministry in Gaza has just released its latest daily update on the number of casualties in Israel’s genocidal war against Palestinians.

In a statement, it said the bodies of three people killed in Israeli attacks had arrived in Gaza’s hospitals over the latest 24-hour reporting period. Another 27 people were wounded.

The figures bring the recorded death toll since a “ceasefire” in October last year to at least 1,375, with 4,686 people injured. A total of 831 bodies have also been recovered, while many victims remain under the rubble as rescue teams are unable to reach them, the ministry said.

It added that the number of people killed since the start of Israel’s war in October 2023 had now risen to at least 73,789 people, with 174,798 others wounded.

UN calls for investigators to preserve evidence of alleged Israeli war crimes in Gaza

The United Nations has called for international investigators to be granted access to all of the Gaza Strip “to assist with evidence-gathering” as hundreds of bodies are pulled from the rubble.

The ongoing recovery of extensive human remains in Gaza – mostly of women and children nearly three years after Israel heavily bombed their homes – highlights the possibility that war crimes have been committed, the UN warned.

“The remains of what appears to be entire families are now being unearthed at locations that were pulverized by Israeli attacks,” UN rights chief Volker Turk said in a statement.

“I worry the remains recovered so far may only be the tip of the iceberg,” he said, pointing to how “much of Gaza has been flattened by Israeli bombing or demolition and clearing by heavy machinery and explosives”.

“Today, many areas in Gaza where the Israeli military is deployed continue to be leveled by bulldozers with no respect for the dead under the rubble,” said Turk.

The Palestinian civil defence agency has reported more than 630 bodies and other human remains have been recovered from beneath destroyed buildings across Gaza since last November.

Israeli military claims to have killed Hamas’s Jabalia battalion commander

The Israeli military has said it carried out an overnight strike in northern Gaza that killed the commander of the Jabalia battalion of Hamas’s Qassam Brigades.

The Israeli military named the Hamas commander as Ahmad Batash, claiming he had managed and organized weapons for the battalion.

Israel’s “security forces remain deployed in the area… and will continue to operate to remove any threat,” the Israeli military said in a statement.

Israeli forces claim killing of PIJ commander in Gaza

The Israeli army says on X that it killed Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) “rocket cell commander” Mohsen Farid Said Abu Hadaf after they struck the Khan Younis area in southern Gaza last weekend.

The army claimed without providing evidence that he participated in the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel. There has been no comment from the PIJ on his killing.

An Israeli strike on makeshift tents in the Al-Mawasi area of Gaza killed two people including an eight-year-old girl named Amal Yasser Omar, Al Jazeera correspondents reported.

At least 14 others were injured in the attack, they added.

Israeli forces shoot, critically injure Palestinian man in occupied West Bank dawn raid

Israeli forces have shot and critically injured a Palestinian man during a dawn raid in el-Bireh, near Ramallah, the Palestinian news agency Wafa reports.

According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, emergency crews in Ramallah treated the man for gunshot wounds to the abdomen and thigh in the Umm ash-Sharayet neighborhood. Paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the scene before rushing him to a local hospital in critical condition.

The shooting occurred amid ongoing Israeli military incursions across towns and cities in the occupied West Bank, which have seen frequent use of live fire against residents alongside heightened military measures.

Palestinian man killed by Israeli forces during occupied West Bank dawn raid

A 54-year-old Palestinian man has been killed by Israeli forces during a dawn raid in el-Bireh in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The ministry said that Ziad Mohammed Jaber died following the military incursion in the Umm ash-Sharayet neighbourhood. Emergency crews initially treated him at the scene for gunshot wounds to the abdomen and thigh before rushing him to a hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

Israeli forces detain at least 21 Palestinians in West Bank raids

Israeli occupation forces have maintained their operations involving raids and detentions across the occupied West Bank on Tuesday.

Palestinian Wafa news agency reports:

• A young man from the city of Nablus was detained early Tuesday, with local sources saying that Israeli forces raided several neighborhoods in Nablus and stormed homes in the al-Makhfiya area.
• Eight Palestinians were arrested in Jericho, where security sources said that Israeli forces raided homes across the city, the Aqabat Jabr refugee camp, and the Ein al-Sultan refugee camp.
• Israeli forces detained eight people in the city of Qalqilya and the town of Kafr Thulth.
• A young man was arrested in Aqaba in the Tubas governorate.
• Three Palestinians were detained during raids on several homes in Bir Nabala, northeast of Jerusalem.

Colony sanctions cause diplomatic crisis

This past week, a flurry of Western countries announced forthcoming sanctions on Israel – for now limited to its illegal colonies in the occupied West Bank. Israel’s response was swift and aggressive: on September 9, it gave the UK 30 days to close its consulate in occupied East Jerusalem.

As Israel hardened its international defiance, such diplomatic moves did little to slow the dispossession of Palestinian land and identity in Jerusalem and the West Bank, as well as the ongoing killings and deterioration of basic conditions in Gaza.

Such efforts can be difficult to grasp as a single, coordinated process. But a newly released B’Tselem report attempts to do exactly that, describing the overarching colonial system as being driven by aspirations of “elimination” – “the sustained undermining of the conditions that allow Palestinians to exist as an independent collective with land, institutions, language, culture, social ties, leadership, shared memory and history and a social and political horizon”.

Colonists establish second outpost at village near Jerusalem, as attacks continue across West Bank

Israeli colonists have established a second outpost in the village of Beit Iksa, northwest of Jerusalem, Palestine’s Wafa news agency has reported.

Colonists were protected by Israeli forces as they installed their equipment in the village; their first outpost was established four months ago.

Residents fear that the outposts may become permanent and allow colonists to control more Palestinian land. The new outpost could also prevent Palestinians from accessing their land.

Separately, colonists attacked an elderly Palestinian man and his wife in the village of Abu Nujaym, southeast of Bethlehem, Wafa reported. The couple sustained bruises in the assault.

Palestinian Prisoner’s Society says Israeli raids in West Bank are ‘sites of killing and extrajudicial executions’

The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) has condemned the killing of Palestinians across the occupied West Bank following the death of Ziad Jaber at dawn today.

Jaber was killed by Israeli forces when they raided his home in the city of Birzeit. He was initially wounded in the shooting and later pronounced dead.

“The occupation turns arrest and raid operations in the West Bank into sites of killing and extrajudicial executions,” the PPS said in a statement.

The organisation said the raid also led to the arrest of Jaber’s nephew and a relative, and that Israeli forces had arrested at least 30 Palestinians across the West Bank between yesterday evening and this morning.

More than 150 Israeli colonists storm Al-Aqsa Mosque compound

A mob of 169 Israeli colonists have stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, heavily protected by Israeli forces, the Palestinian Wafa news agency has reported, citing the Jerusalem Governorate. After entering through Bab al-Maghariba, the colonists performed Talmudic prayer rituals in the mosque’s courtyards.

Non-Muslims are permitted to visit the Al-Aqsa compound, but performing prayers is not allowed under a 1967 status quo agreement governing the site.

Radical colonist groups have called on their supporters to participate en masse in incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque under the pretext of celebrating the Jewish New Year. Israeli authorities use Jewish holidays to close roads and impose severe restrictions on the movement of Palestinians across the occupied West Bank, including Jerusalem, Wafa reported.

EU top diplomat says discussions ongoing for further sanctions against Israeli colonists

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas says that discussions are ongoing in the European Council on further sanctions against Israeli colonists in the occupied West Bank.

In a statement to the EU parliament, Kallas said that “on top of the three packages of sanctions against extremist colonists, discussions are now ongoing in the Council on possible further designations. Accountability is a prerequisite for reining in violent colonists.”

Kallas said that colony expansion is increasing in the West Bank along with more forced displacements and record levels of colonist violence.

The EU top diplomat also addressed the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, saying that “there is a ceasefire in name only. People are still being killed and wounded.”
