Woman injured in Iraq’s Baghdad amid drone attack

A fire has broken out in a house in Baghdad’s southern Al I’alam neighborhood after a drone fell in the area.

One woman was wounded in the incident.

This came shortly after an Iraqi source told Al Jazeera that security forces shot down a drone over the Al I’alam neighborhood.

Drones intercepted near Iraq’s Baghdad airport

Footage from the early hours of the morning shows several interceptions near the international airport in Baghdad.

The Associated Press news agency, citing a security source, said Iraqi air defenses shot down a drone early this morning as it approached Victoria Base, a US-operated military compound inside Baghdad International Airport.

The Kurdish Rudaw news outlet is reporting that air defences at the international airport in Erbil have intercepted a drone attack.

US forces are stationed at the airport in the city, which is the capital of the Kurdish region of Iraq.

Kataib Hezbollah, meanwhile, said it reflects a profound understanding “of the existential challenges confronting the nation”.

Kuwait tells Baghdad some attacks originated from Iraq: Iraqi Foreign Ministry

Iraq’s Foreign Ministry says Kuwait has informed it that some of the attacks targeting the Gulf country originated from Iraqi territory and asked Baghdad to intervene to put an end to them.

The message was conveyed in person by Kuwait’s ambassador to Iraq, Mohammed Hassan Al-Zaman, during Sunday’s meeting with Iraq’s undersecretary for bilateral relations, Mohammed Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom, the statement published by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

“In his response, the Undersecretary affirmed that the Iraqi government is making great and exceptional efforts to spare Iraq the repercussions of the war, and to work to preserve the country’s security and stability in the face of the attacks to which Iraq is exposed, like other countries in the region,” the statement said.

“Ambassador Bahr Al-Uloom also stressed that Iraq rejects the logic of war in general, and in particular the use of its territory as a launching pad for targeting neighbouring countries, stressing that the government is taking all necessary measures, under the direction of the political leadership and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to pursue the perpetrators of any acts that harm the country’s interests and its relations with neighbouring countries.”

An Iraqi security source says the logistical support camp for the US embassy near Baghdad airport was targeted.

Air defense systems at the logistics camp were activated, it said.

Air defences down drones near Iraq’s Baghdad airport

Anti-aircraft defences have downed two drones, leading to a fire at the crash site near the Baghdad airport.

Earlier, a logistics support camp for the US embassy near Baghdad airport had been targeted.

At the same time, police reported drone attacks on Iraqi border posts in the far southeast of Basra and areas of Al-Siba, Al-Tanuma, Abu Al-Khasib, and south of Al-Shalamja.

While explosions and fires occurred, no casualties have so far been reported.

Iraqi armed group claims responsibility for Baghdad airport attack

In a statement posted to its Telegram channel, the Iraqi armed group Saraya Awliya al-Dam has claimed to have struck the Victoria military airbase at Baghdad airport using drones.

Last week, two drones also targeted a US military base and a hotel in Erbil, in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

The attacks come after a building in Sulaimaniyah, in the Iraqi Kurdish region, was hit by a drone strike last Tuesday. Footage shared online and verified by Al Jazeera showed flames rising from a building.

UAE says consulate in Iraq’s Kurdish region attacked by drone

The UAE says its consulate general in Iraq’s Kurdish region has been targeted in a drone attack, leaving damage but no casualties.

A Foreign Ministry statement on X said the attack “represents a dangerous escalation and a threat to regional security and stability”.

“Targeting diplomatic missions and premises constitutes a flagrant violation of all international norms and laws,” it said.

The statement did not say where the drone had been launched from, and called on local authorities to “investigate the circumstances of this attack to identify those responsible”.

Rubio urges Iraq to protect US Embassy after Iran protests

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has urged Iraq’s leadership to ensure the continued protection of the US Embassy in Baghdad following a wave of angry protests.

In a call with Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, Rubio “reiterated the importance of the Iraqi government taking all possible measures to safeguard US diplomatic personnel and facilities”, State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said.
