EU’s Kallas says Red Sea naval mission needs more ships

Kaja Kallas, the EU foreign policy chief, says the international maritime mission known as Aspides needs reinforcements to protect shipping in the Red Sea.

Speaking at a meeting of EU defence ministers in Brussels, Kallas said she has been pushing member states to contribute more to the mission, but has yet to receive any firm commitments.

The European Union launched the naval mission to protect cargo ships in the Red Sea from attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels in February 2024. It deployed European warships and airborne early warning systems to the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and surrounding waters.

After a rapid territorial advance earlier this month, Houthi forces are now positioned 20km (12 miles) from the African coast and essentially control the strategically significant Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a chokepoint for Red Sea maritime traffic.
