Turkey FM says Israel poses greatest threat to Syria’s stability
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Israel currently poses the greatest potential threat to Syria’s stability, Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency is reporting, citing comments he made to journalists during a two-day visit to Damascus.
Fidan said he held a two-hour meeting with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa covering “all issues,” Anadolu said. He said Syria’s overall trajectory has been positive over the past two years, citing its removal from sanctions and terrorism lists, but said Israel “doesn’t particularly like neighboring countries being strong and stable” and engages in destabilizing actions as a result. He warned Israel would either accept peaceful coexistence with its neighbors or become further isolated internationally.
Fidan also said technical-level talks between Turkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan on the structure of the newly formed Mecca Alliance are nearing completion, with plans to expand its membership. Fidan said attacks on Saudi Arabia from any direction, including by Iraq-based actors, are unacceptable, and reaffirmed Turkish solidarity with Riyadh over threats from Yemen’s Houthis.
