Syria’s top diplomat condemns Iran, Israel at Arab League meeting
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani has told the Arab League Council of Foreign Ministers meeting that Damascus rejects the use of Arab territory by Iran to settle disputes or as a platform for attacks, according to Syrian state news agency SANA.
Al-Shaibani said Syria supports dialogue and closer security and economic cooperation, particularly with neighboring Arab states.
Addressing the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, he said Colombia had recently recognized Israel’s annexation of the territory and thanked Arab states for condemning the move.
Al-Shaibani said recent political developments have coincided with an Israeli escalation aimed at imposing new zones of influence and disrupting Syria’s recovery, pointing to Syria’s declared solidarity with Gulf states and Jordan since the outbreak of the US-Israel war on Iran.
He said Syria refuses to be drawn into a conflict that would divert its efforts from rebuilding, and remains committed to a diplomatic solution.
“We are engaged in US-mediated negotiations aimed at ending the attacks, arrests and incursions, securing a withdrawal to the lines preceding 8 December 2024, and restoring full compliance with the 1974 Disengagement Agreement,” al-Shaibani told the meeting, according to SANA.
