Lebanese president asks US’s Rubio to press Israel on aggressions in southern Lebanon

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has asked US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to pressure Israel to halt attacks in southern Lebanon, including ceasing bulldozing operations to allow local farmers to access their fields.

During a phone call, the two also discussed the Lebanese army carrying out its duties related to the framework agreement between Lebanon and Israel signed in June.

Despite the agreement, which sets out Israel’s phased withdrawal from Lebanon, Israel continues to occupy parts of the country’s southern region.

US State Department: Rubio spoke with Lebanon’s Aoun on confiscation of Hezbollah explosives

A US Department of State official has said Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on the confiscation of hundreds of kilograms of explosives belonging to Hezbollah.

According to the official, Rubio urged Aoun to hold those responsible for the smuggled shipment of explosives accountable and initiate direct communication between the Lebanese and Israeli military “for deconfliction”.

Earlier, we reported that the Lebanese president’s office said the president asked Rubio to pressure Israel to halt attacks on southern Lebanon and the destruction of villages there.

IMF plans mission to Lebanon next month

A senior International Monetary Fund (IMF) official says the organisation had discussions with Lebanese authorities this week that will continue in the coming weeks, with IMF staff due to visit the country in November.

Athanasios Arvanitis, deputy director of the IMF’s Middle East and Central Asia Department, said the discussions focused on the banking sector and on ensuring Lebanese people had confidence in the system.

Arvanitis said restoring debt sustainability was another key issue.
