Iraqi first lady to Trump administration: Leave the Kurds alone

The US should stop treating Kurds as proxies in its war against Iran, Iraq’s First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed said in remarks marking the 35th anniversary of the 1991 Kurdish uprising against late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Ahmed issued the statement amid reports that the US is recruiting Kurdish forces to fight against the Iranian military.

“We are not guns for hire,” Ahmed, a prominent Kurdish figure and wife of Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid, was quoted as saying by Iran’s English-language state channel Press TV.

In her remarks, Ahmed referred to the Kurdish uprising in Sulaimaniyah in 1991, during which the US failed to give the Kurds assistance.

“No one came to our defence,” she said in her statement.

Iraqi armed group claims attacks targeting US interests

Fighters of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI) have carried out at least 27 operations and attacks against US interests in Iraq and the region in the last 24 hours, the group said.

In a statement posted on the Telegram messaging platform, the IRI said the attacks targeted “enemy bases” in Iraq using drones and missiles.

There were no immediate reports of casualties and damage from the alleged attacks.

The statement also did not mention specific locations that were targeted.

IRI is an umbrella group of Iran-backed armed groups in the region that also fought against ISIL (ISIS). The group previously claimed responsibility for attacks in response to US support for Israel’s war on Gaza.

Iraqi armed group claims drone attack on Jordan

The Iraqi armed group Saraya Awliya al-Dam has claimed responsibility for a drone attack against a “vital” target in Jordan.

In a statement posted on the group’s Telegram channel earlier today, the group declared that the strike was in response to the killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The group did not provide further details, and Al Jazeera could not independently verify their claims.

Iranian Kurdish group struck by drones in Iraqi Kurdistan region

A camp of the Khabat Organization of Iranian Kurdistan [an Iranian Kurdish group based in the Iraqi Kurdistan region] was hit by drones last night. There were two drone attacks, injuring two people.

The group was caught completely off guard, from what we can tell.

Speaking to some of the fighters here, they don’t believe the drone was launched from Iran. They believe groups aligned with Iran and based in Iraq are responsible.

The fighters say they have not been in contact with or received support from the Americans or Israelis. But they say they are willing to mount ground operations. However, the politicians in northern Iraq are painting a different picture. Nechirvan Barzani, president of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdish region, said Iraqi Kurdistan will not be part of any conflict or military escalation.

Iran Defense Council member threatens attacks in Iraqi Kurdistan

Ali Akbar Ahmadian, a member of Iran’s Defense Council, has warned that Iran could carry out widespread attacks in Iraq’s Kurdistan region if local authorities do not crack down on what he described as US and Israeli-backed rebel groups allegedly plotting to enter Iran.

In comments carried by Mehr news agency, Ahmadian said Iran has so far targeted only US and Israeli bases and separatist groups. However, he warned officials in Iraqi Kurdistan that if such groups are allowed to operate, plot or enter Iran via the region, all Iraqi Kurdistan facilities could be targeted.

It was not immediately clear who launched the drone or whether there were casualties or damage at the facility.

Iran launches missile attacks on Kurdish opposition groups in Iraq’s Kurdistan region

Iran has carried out missile attacks targeting Kurdish armed opposition groups in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq, according to Iranian state TV.

The report said Iranian forces struck positions belonging to what Tehran described as anti-Iran separatist groups based in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

The strikes come amid reports that the US is coordinating with Kurdish opposition factions based in Iraq, who have signaled they may enter the conflict against Iran.

Iraq PM, Kurdistan president discuss regional security after attacks

Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani has discussed regional security developments with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani following attacks reported in several Iraqi cities.

In a phone call on Friday, the two leaders rejected attacks targeting locations across Iraq, including in the Kurdistan region, according to a statement from the prime minister’s office on X.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to preventing Iraqi territory from being used as a launching point for attacks against neighbouring countries.

Both sides stressed the need for national unity to confront current security challenges and preserve Iraq’s stability, sovereignty and national security, according to the statement.

Iranian Kurdish group denies attack plans but say they would join US invasion

Kurdish Iranian dissident fighters based in northern Iraq say they are not planning an imminent cross-border attack on Iran, but would join a US-led ground invasion if one were launched.

Officials from the Kurdistan Freedom Party PAK told The Associated Press that their forces would fight alongside coalition forces in the event of a US ground operation, though they said Kurdish groups should not act as the “spearhead” of such an attack.

Khalil Nadiri, an official with the Kurdistan Freedom Party PAK, said the group also has armed members already inside Iran who could potentially take part in an uprising.

The officials added that Kurdish groups have been in contact with the United States and Israel but denied receiving any material support from them.

The comments come after Kurdish officials reportedly said earlier this week that Iranian Kurdish dissident groups based in Iraq could be preparing for a possible cross-border operation against Iran.

France’s Macron expresses ‘full solidarity’ with Iraqi PM

French President Emmanuel Macron says he spoke directly with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.

“I expressed to him France’s full solidarity with Iraq in the face of the ongoing escalation in the Middle East”, Macron wrote in a social media statement in French and Arabic. “I reiterated my support for his resolute action to ensure that Iraq is not drawn into the conflict.”

Iraq’s stability is “essential for the entire region”, the president added.

Drone targets hotel in Iraq’s Erbil: Report

A ⁠drone targeted the Erbil Arjaan by Rotana ⁠hotel in the Kurdish region of northern of Iraq, the Reuters news agency is reporting, citing security sources.

The ‌US embassy in Baghdad said earlier said that Iran-aligned armed groups ⁠may seek to target ⁠hotels frequented by ⁠foreigners in ⁠Iraq’s Kurdistan region, according to ‌a post on X.

Drone falls at Baghdad military airport as attacks hit Iraq’s capital and Basra

A drone fell at the military airport in Baghdad, setting fire to one of the storage facilities there, according to an Iraqi security source.

There was no immediate official statement on the incident, which the source said took place minutes earlier.

The reported drone fall came about an hour after Iraqi authorities said rockets had been launched at the logistical support centre of the United States embassy near Baghdad airport.

Officials said the rockets were fired from a vehicle in the Abu Ghraib area, west of Baghdad, and landed in an open area without causing injuries. Iraqi authorities added that they had seized the vehicle, which was carrying additional rockets prepared for launch, and had opened an immediate investigation.

The area around Baghdad airport has been targeted repeatedly in recent days, including several drone attacks over the past three days.

In a separate development, an Iraqi security source said that a US company operating in the oil and fuel sector in Basra was also targeted, with smoke seen rising from the site.
