UN chief marks anniversary of October 7 with call for permanent ceasefire and peace
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said the “horrors” of the Hamas-led October 2, 2023, attack on Israel “must never be repeated” in a message marking the anniversary of the assault.
In a post on X, Guterres said the devastating hostilities that followed have inflicted “untold suffering” on Palestinians in Gaza, “including massive loss of life, displacement, and destruction. Civilians continue to endure intolerable conditions. Their suffering, too, demands an end, now.”
Last year’s “ceasefire” in Gaza brought some relief, Guterres said, but he added that it has yet to deliver security, adequate humanitarian aid or a credible path to recovery and peace.
“It is time for the ceasefire to become permanent,” he said. “It is time to allow humanitarian assistance at scale. And it is time to respect international law.”
The anniversary, he said, should mark a renewed determination to build a different future for the region, “one in which Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side in peace and security, with their rights, dignity, and aspirations fulfilled”.

Israeli forces raid Birzeit University, demolish memorial honoring Palestinian students
Israeli forces raided Birzeit University in the occupied West Bank, demolishing a memorial honoring at least 38 Palestinian students killed by Israeli forces or settlers and replacing it with a plant.
Students say the move is part of a broader Israeli campaign to suppress collective Palestinian identity on campus, alongside repeated raids, threats and restrictions on political activity, including ahead of a January protest supporting Palestinian prisoners.

Israeli settlers set vehicles on fire near Nablus as army raids West Bank towns
Israeli settlers have set four vehicles ablaze near Nablus in the occupied West Bank, where they spray-painted racist slogans calling for revenge, Wafa is reporting.
Settlers set fire to a house belonging to a family of five in the village of Burqa, east of Ramallah, the Palestinian news agency said.
The Israeli military meanwhile raided the village of Kafr Qaddum, near Qalqilya, making one arrest and searching homes for about five hours.
In Beit Ummar, soldiers ransacked a home before arresting one of its occupants, the agency said.
Raids were also reported in the Tulkarem suburbs of Dhannaba and Iktaba, as well as the al-Mahjar neighborhood of the Nur Shams refugee camp. No arrests were reported.
Palestinians in the occupied West Bank are facing rising settler and military violence, with the pattern of the attacks fitting the definition of a pogrom, experts say.
