EBRD cuts growth forecasts as conflict and energy shocks hit Iraq and Lebanon

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has cut its growth forecasts as the war drives an energy shock that is hitting Iraq’s oil-dependent economy particularly hard.

The EBRD now expects growth across its regions to slow to 2.5 percent in 2026, down from 3.4 percent in 2025.

Iraq’s economy is projected to contract by 12 percent this year, with the risk of a deeper downturn if export disruptions persist through the end of the year. “The problem in Iraq is disruption to exports,” EBRD Chief Economist Beata Javorcik told the AFP news agency.

Meanwhile, Lebanon’s economy is expected to contract by 5 percent this year due to ongoing conflict with Israel.

Lebanon PM talks ‘return, recovery, reconstruction’ with Middle East leaders

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam says his meetings at the UN General Assembly focused on achieving Israel’s complete withdrawal from Lebanese territory and preparing for a post-UN peacekeeper phase.

Salam said he participated in the US multilateral summit alongside the Gulf Cooperation Council states, as well as Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey.

The meetings focused on “efforts to de-escalate tensions and spare Lebanon and the region further confrontations, and strengthening Lebanon’s Arab, regional and international relations”, he posted on X.

Talks also addressed “mobilising support for the process of return, recovery and reconstruction … in affected areas”, after Israel’s devastating attacks and occupation that have killed more than 4,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands since the March invasion.

At UN sideline meeting, Lebanon invites Iran to appoint new ambassador

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has invited Iran to nominate a new ambassador to Beirut, the prime minister’s office says in a statement.

Salam said that Lebanon wants to “turn a new page,” and build a relationship with Iran “based on mutual respect for sovereignty and independence, noninterference in each other’s affairs, and shared interests”.

The prime minister added during a meeting with the Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, that Lebanon “does not wish to serve as an arena for regional conflicts or the exchange of messages.”

Lebanon had withdrawn accreditation from the Iranian ambassador to Beirut in March, but the ambassador, Mohammad Reza Sheibani, remained in the country and received backing from the Iran-aligned group Hezbollah.
