Iraq-Iran foreign ministers discuss regional de-escalation at UNGA
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein has held talks with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on the sidelines of the UNGA.
In a post on X, Hussein said indirect communications are currently under way between Tehran and Washington, as are efforts aimed at “de-escalation and reopening the Strait of Hormuz to navigational traffic”.
“Dialogue and diplomacy remain the most effective path to contain tensions and prevent their escalation, and regional security and freedom of navigation require regional cooperation and responsible dialogue among the concerned parties,” he affirmed.

Iran cancels flights to Iraq, Oman amid intensified US sanctions
Iran has been forced to cancel regional international flights because of pressure from US sanctions.
Iranian media citing the Civil Aviation Authority said Iraq and Oman will no longer be receiving flights from Iran from Wednesday morning.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced further pressure on Iran’s aviation sector in an interview on Monday, and threatened states with exclusion from the US dollar system if they supplied Iranian airlines with fuel, provided landing services, or sold tickets on their behalf.
Majid Akhavan, a spokesman for the Iranian aviation authority, said Iran was working to redirect flights to Iraq through a different airport, ISNA reported.
Iranian airlines’ flights to neighbouring Azerbaijan have also been suspended with immediate effect, the newspaper Shargh reported, citing Azerbaijan Airlines.
