UN human rights office says Israel detains 49 Syrians amid 280 September incursions
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has said Israel currently detains 49 Syrians, as it carried out 280 armed incursions into Syria in September.
A statement issued by Turk’s office on Friday said released Syrian detainees reported “allegations of torture and ill-treatment”, among other violations against them.
The office said that in September Israel conducted the highest monthly number of incursions into Syria since the start of the year.
The incursions include “reported raids on homes, restrictions on movement, harassment and intimidation of civilians, arbitrary detention and destruction of livelihoods”, according to the statement.
The statement called on Israeli authorities to “cease actions that harass or intimidate civilians in Syrian villages, including raids, restrictions on freedom of movement, detention and destruction of crops”.
