Lebanese PM urges action over Israel, says ‘waiting for a major regional settlement is not an option’
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has delivered a speech in Nabatieh where he affirmed his commitment to southern Lebanon amidst continuous Israeli strikes on the region, stating that waiting for a peace deal in the region is not an option.
Salam said that the war in southern Lebanon was “not our choice but was imposed upon us,” adding that the scale of needs in the area “exceeds the state’s capacity” and that the country needs substantial funding.
He said that capabilities must be mobilised to achieve an Israeli withdrawal and build the state with “one army,” stressing that the government’s priorities are to stop “the aggressions and ensure Israel’s withdrawal” and the return of Lebanese citizens to their towns.
“Waiting for a major regional settlement is not an option for us because it may come or not come, or it may be at our expense,” Salam said.

Lebanon’s Maronite bishops condemn Israel attacks in southern Lebanon
Christian Maronite bishops meeting in Bkerke, the headquarters and episcopal seat of the Maronite Catholic Patriarchate in Lebanon northeast of Beirut, have condemned Israeli occupation and attacks, Lebanon’s National News Agency reports.
In a statement, the bishops, led by Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Boutros al-Rai, stressed the need for international efforts to end Israel’s occupation of southern Lebanon and help residents return to their homes.
An estimated 30,000 Lebanese are still displaced as a result of Israeli attacks, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). That’s down from 1.2 million in April, although humanitarian workers have warned the drop should not be interpreted as permanent or even durable.
