Amnesty reminds states of legal obligation to detain Netanyahu

Amnesty International has highlighted the International Criminal Court’s decision to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In a statement posted to social media, the human rights organization stressed that “member states of the court have the legal obligation to detain and surrender Netanyahu if he sets foot on their territories”.

Amnesty also condemned the “policies and actions of the Netanyahu government linked to the expansion of settlements and serious human rights violations in the West Bank and Gaza”.

 

UK ‘threatens to expel 27 Israeli diplomats’ over Jerusalem consulate

The UK’s ambassador to Israel, Simon Walters, has conveyed the UK’s threat to expel 27 Israeli diplomats should Israel proceed with plans to close the British consulate in occupied East Jerusalem.

According to the report, the UK government has threatened to expel one Israeli diplomat for each of the 27 British diplomats whose diplomatic status at the consulate would be terminated in the event that it is shut.

Israel ordered the closure of the consulate by October 8 in retaliation for the UK’s decision to sanction illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Israel’s defence minister claims Hamas preparing attacks for October 7 anniversary

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has said that he has put the military on high alert ahead of Wednesday’s anniversary of Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack, warning Palestinians in Gaza that they would pay a “heavy price” if any of Israel’s forces were harmed.

Katz’s office said the instruction came “in light of intelligence regarding Hamas’ intentions to attempt to carry out attacks and terror operations against our forces in Gaza on that day”.

“If, heaven forbid, our forces are harmed, the ones who will pay the heavy price will be Hamas and the population of Gaza – beyond all proportion,” the statement added.
